Essential Issues to Provide When Traveling to Mexico

Traveling to Mexico is among the issues which you do not desire to miss for the globe, but it wouldn?t be as fun or can even be disastrous when you fail to provide one of the most essential products. So what do you exactly have to bring?

one. Bring outfits that are proper for that climate. Many regions in Mexico have diverse weather, so you might too make sure the situation with the location where you are intended to go. For instance, those which are located in elevated areas for instance the Central Plateau could be a whole lot colder than these locations inside the plains. Therefore, you might want to stock on jackets and pants that can maintain you warm in the course of nighttime. The months of September until December can also be pretty cold as well.

2. Don?t neglect the sleeping bags or pads. There are many facilities for backpackers and transient travelers in Mexico, where accommodation can be definitely low-priced. Even so, they may possibly lack the important facilities, such as sleeping pads or bags. For those who select to remain here, you superior make certain that you can bring these essentials, or else, you?ll be sleeping uncomfortably around the floor. But if you would like to really feel pampered, calm, and unstressed when traveling to Mexico, you much better save some revenue for a great remain inside a hotel, including Grupo Mayan. It features first-class amenities and massive space for the fair cost.

three. Keep your cameras ready. You might depart all your jewellery behind your space, but don?t forget to keep the camera close to you when you?re out on a tour. Just about just about every city in Mexico has some thing to offer you to a traveler like you. The top way to preserve these recollections is to consider those snapshots. Just so you do not have to go scrambling for a lot more movies, use a digital digital camera, having a microSD that has huge potential. This way, it is likely to be just unlimited clicking.

four. Get rid of too-revealing dresses. Unless you are hitting the seaside, keep those tank tops, little T-shirts, and shorts within your bag initial. A good deal of people today in Mexico are staunch Catholics, which deem these dresses inappropriate to wear. What is extra, your excursion may perhaps include visits to some of their oldest churches. You do not wish to offend them by donning on these types of clothes. Stay clear of bringing shirts with offensive language or drawing printed on them. Even when you are the guest, you still would like to stay respectful to the tradition and personalities of the Mexicans.

five. Don comfortable shoes and slippers. Surely, there will likely be a whole lot of walking that you are heading to do in Mexico, so high-heeled sneakers and stilettos ought to be reserved for the night-out only. Pack a minimum of one rubber shoes along with a slipper, which you can use when you?re heading for the seaside.

6. Bring money. ATMs have their own schedules for refills, and also you do not wish to end up residing a day without any funds to spend. Thus, convey a fantastic quantity of cash with you. If you are remaining in a hotel, you could select to shop it within their safety deposit box.

Will Hollywood still shower the love on Obama? (AP)

NEW YORK ? Hollywood, as everyone knows, loves the Next Big Thing. And four years ago, Barack Obama was certainly that: a political supernova, the equivalent of a breakout movie star.

"He is `The One,'" declared Oprah Winfrey, his biggest and most influential celebrity champion. "The best candidate I've ever seen," pronounced George Clooney. Halle Berry said she'd "collect paper cups off the ground to make his pathway clear." Black Eyed Peas frontman will.i.am chimed in with the famous "Yes We Can" video. And so on.

But you can't be the Next Big Thing twice. And so, with the 2012 vote less than a year away, there's clearly a different mood in heavily Democratic Hollywood: less gushing, not to mention snippets of criticism, most prominently from actor Matt Damon, who campaigned for Obama last time but now makes no secret of his disillusionment.

"I think he misinterpreted his mandate," Damon said earlier this year, and then recently told Elle magazine the country would have been better off with a one-term president with guts (he used a much saltier word).

But while the adulation of the 2008 election may be significantly muted among Hollywood liberals, as with liberals elsewhere, Obama supporters say that's only natural, given the circumstances. Fundraisers there say that events have been selling out and there's plenty of enthusiasm.

Most importantly, they add, the nation's attention has been on the battling Republicans. Soon, the choice will get starker and the Democratic base will be energized, they argue.

"The moment the Republicans have their nominee is when you're going to see anyone still on the fence jump in," says Chad Griffin, a Los Angeles-based communications strategist and Democratic fundraiser. "Once you have a head-to-head matchup, the contrast will be grand."

Numbers compiled by the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics show that while overall political contributions were up in Hollywood for the first three quarters of this year compared with the same period four years ago, contributions to Democrats were slightly down.

According to the group, the movie, television and recording industries ? a large chunk of which is Hollywood ? gave $17,639,267 in the first three quarters to federal candidates and parties, with 71 percent going to the Democrats and 29 percent to Republicans, as opposed to $15,642,561 four years ago, when 77 percent went to the Democrats and 23 percent to Republicans.

But numbers for the Democrats were down by more than $2.5 million from four years ago ? $9,249,303 this year compared with $11,966,077 four years ago.

Obama's fundraisers note that four years ago, Obama was locked in a tense primary battle with Hillary Rodham Clinton ? and primaries drive early fundraising.

"A re-election is always different," says Andy Spahn, a longtime political adviser to one of the top Democratic fundraisers in the nation, DreamWorks co-founder Jeffrey Katzenberg, along with his partners Steven Spielberg and David Geffen.

He calls the current mood among Hollywood Democrats a "matured enthusiasm," but says support is strong.

Though Damon's remarks about the president have been the most pointed, other celebrities have expressed disappointment, or at least mild disillusionment.

"I love the president like most of us," Sean "Diddy" Combs told Source magazine this year. "I just want the president to do better."

And will.i.am, creator of that viral video that ended with the word "HOPE," told The New York Times earlier this year: "I don't want to hope anymore." Asked if he was disappointed in Obama, he said: "I don't feel disappointed. I feel like, Argggh! Speak louder! I feel like, Do something!"

What about core Obama celebrity supporters Clooney and Winfrey? Far from being disillusioned with Obama, Clooney said recently: "I'm disillusioned by the people who are disillusioned by Obama."

"Democrats eat their own," the actor said. "I'm a firm believer in sticking by and sticking up for the people whom you've elected." He went on to list the accomplishments of the Obama administration, wondering why Democrats weren't selling them better.

And Winfrey, credited with helping Obama win over many women in 2008, told Politico in August: "I'm in his corner for whatever he needs me to do."

There already have been plenty of celebrities hosting or showing up at Obama fundraising events. Actress Eva Longoria hosted one at the home of Melanie Griffith and Antonio Banderas. Lady Gaga attended a September fundraiser at the home of Facebook's chief operating officer, Sheryl Sandberg. Alicia Keys performed at a New York fundraiser.

And in the summer, film executive Harvey Weinstein held a Manhattan event sprinkled with celebs including Keys, Jimmy Fallon, and Gwyneth Paltrow and husband Chris Martin. A 50th birthday-themed fundraiser in Chicago featured performances by Jennifer Hudson, Herbie Hancock and the band OK Go.

Of course, celebrity support isn't always a win-win for a candidate. Just as Obama's opponents in 2008 tried to use his taste for arugula to paint him as elitist, they tried to use his celebrity connections to imply he was lightweight, all pizazz and no substance ? most pointedly in an ad tenuously linking him to Paris Hilton and Britney Spears.

The tactic seemed to scare Obama's campaign enough to downplay the role of celebrities at the Democratic convention that summer. Will the campaign similarly seek to downplay the celebrity role this time?

"Celebrities are helpful in terms of exciting a base," says Griffin, the fundraiser. "I don't think the president will have any shortage of surrogates."

One thing is clear: They won't include Damon, and the president wasn't shy about making a few jokes at the actor's expense back in May, at the White House Correspondents' Association dinner.

"Matt Damon said he was disappointed in my performance," the president noted. Then he referred to one of Damon's recent films. "Well, Matt, I just saw `The Adjustment Bureau,' so right back atcha, buddy."

Damon, whose representatives did not respond to a request for comment, has given no sign that he plans to do anything as dramatic as switch sides in November. The real danger, say some Obama supporters, is that comments like his would lead voters ? especially key younger ones ? to stay home.

That's a threat the president faces in places well beyond Hollywood.

Ken Sunshine, a prominent public relations consultant who has represented top entertainers and politicians, thinks that ultimately "the activist community in entertainment and everywhere else will come home and support the president's re-election with the same degree of enthusiasm as before ? if for no other reason than ... consider the alternative!"

"But once we help him get re-elected," Sunshine adds, "then we really hold his feet to the fire in the second term."

California's chief justice, a GOP appointee, says death penalty no longer effective in state

--?

Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye, who heads California's judicial branch and its highest court, said in an interview that the death penalty is no longer effective in California and suggested she would welcome a public debate on its merits and costs.

As she prepared to close up shop for the holidays, the Republican appointee and former prosecutor made her first public statements about capital punishment a year after she took the helm of the state's judiciary and at a time when petitions are being gathered for an initiative to abolish the death penalty.

"I don't think it is working," said Cantil-Sakauye, elevated from the Court of Appeal in Sacramento to the California Supreme Court by former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. "It's not effective. We know that."

California's death penalty requires "structural change, and we don't have the money to create the kind of change that is needed," she said during an interview in her chambers. "Everyone is laboring under a staggering load."

In response to a question, she said she supported capital punishment "only in the sense I apply the law and I believe the system is fair. ... In that sense, yes."

But the chief justice quickly reframed the question.

"I don't know if the question is whether you believe in it anymore. I think the greater question is its effectiveness and given the choices we face in California, should we have a merit-based discussion on its effectiveness and costs?"

Cantil-Sakauye's comments suggest a growing frustration with capital punishment even among conservatives and a resignation that the system cannot be fixed as long as California's huge financial problems persist.

Her predecessor, retired Chief Justice Ronald M. George, was similarly disheartened. A former prosecutor who defended the state's death penalty before the U.S. Supreme Court, George concluded in his later years on the California Supreme Court that the system was "dysfunctional."

Cantil-Sakauye, 53, alluded to the proposed ballot measure to replace the death penalty with life without possibility of parole but declined to say whether she supported that plan.

"That really is up to the voters or to the Legislature," she said, asking whether the criminal justice system can "make better use of our resources."

In her first year on the state high court, Cantil-Sakauye has more often sided with its conservative justices than its more moderate jurists, said Santa Clara University law professor Gerald Uelmen, an expert on the court. He said her early track record shows her as more conservative than George, who was a key swing vote on the seven-member court.

Uelmen called the chief justice's comments on the death penalty "powerful" and said they confirmed what he has been hearing privately - that even the conservatives on the California Supreme Court have grown disillusioned with the state's capital punishment system.

Men and women on death row are far more likely to die of old age than by the executioner's needle. Litigation has brought executions to a halt, and there is a shortage of lawyers willing to take capital cases. Inmates must wait an average of five years before getting lawyers to bring their first appeal.

Cantil-Sakauye has written a ruling affirming a death sentence and joined other justices' decisions upholding capital sentences since her elevation to the high court last January. Her biggest ruling came in a Proposition 8 case in which she said initiative sponsors have the right to defend their ballot measures in court when state officials refuse to do so.

The chief justice indicated during the interview that she is probably still too new on the court for outsiders to assess her judicial philosophy. Most of her first year was dominated by administrative matters, particularly budget cuts, she said.

She spends more time with Justice Marvin R. Baxter than any other member of the court because he serves with her on the Judicial Council, the policymaking body for the judiciary, she said. Baxter is considered the court's most conservative member.

If Canada is Google's sweetheart, why is access still a problem?

Google GOOG-Q marked its 10th year in Canada by nearly doubling the size of its staff here and the Mountain View, Calif.-based company intends to make its Canadian presence even larger in 2012.

?Canada is one of the fastest growing markets for Google and it?s one of our big bets corporately. It?s a market that Google is very committed to and investing in heavily in terms of resources and growing very, very quickly,? said Eric Morris, head of mobile advertising at Google Canada.

More related to this story

Mr. Morris was one of the first two Google employees to set up shop in Canada after the company first moved north in 2001. When asked if Google might double its Canadian staff again in 2012, from its current roster of about 300 employees, he said ?hopefully.?

?We hope to continue that robust pace well into 2012. We?re going to continue to expand our business here and continue to hire and continue to invest in Canada.?

The company currently has four Canadian offices, in Toronto, Waterloo, Ont., Montreal and Ottawa, and the employees there work on some of Google?s top projects.

?Some of the smartest, smartest talent we have corporately comes out of Waterloo and some other places in Canada,? said Mr. Morris.

?They?ve contributed to Gmail, some of our mobile apps, to commerce, to making the Internet safer and faster with things like Chrome and knocking out malware ? so lots and lots of technological innovation has come from Canada.?

Mr. Morris said Google?s growing presence in Canada has a lot to do with the strong digital culture here and the way it?s grown over the last decade.

In 2002, the company projected that 70 per cent of Canada?s population would be online by 2017 ? we?re already past 80 per cent.

?If you think back to when Google first opened its office in Canada the Internet was a growing medium, but it was much, much smaller,? he said.

?It was kind of mass media at the time, but today virtually everybody is online.?

He admits it?s tough to explain to his fellow Canadians why we?re still not among the first to get access to some Google features, noting Google Voice in particular is ?the toughest one.?

?Yeah, I think that?s frustrating. I?m a lover of tech and even because I work here I don?t always get access to everything that I read about,? Mr. Morris said.

?It?s something we?re working on. These are complicated products ? when we can we launch globally ? but there are some nuances to products, whether it?s language issues or policy-related issues, that make global launches more challenging.?

Canadians also do not yet have access to Google Wallet, which allows users to make payments in stores with a smartphone. In general, Canadian businesses are a bit behind when it comes to adopting e-commerce, which Google sees as an opportunity, Morris said.

?We think it?s going to happen here and it?s increasing each year. And as a result, that?s a place Google wants to invest in to try and accelerate that process,? he said.

Earlier this year, Google started a program called Get Your Business Online to help Canadian small businesses establish a web presence and embrace the web.

?Canada is certainly ripe for that kind of technological innovation ... so we hope to see it take off here soon.?

More Schooling Might Raise IQ (HealthDay)

MONDAY, Dec. 26 (HealthDay News) -- Children who have more schooling may see their IQ improve, Norwegian researchers have found.

Although time spent in school has been linked with IQ, earlier studies did not rule out the possibility that people with higher IQs might simply be likelier to get more education than others, the researchers noted.

Now, however, "there is good evidence to support the notion that schooling does make you 'smarter' in some general relevant way as measured by IQ tests," said study author Taryn Galloway, a researcher at Statistics Norway in Oslo.

Findings from the large-scale study appear in this week's online edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

IQ, or intelligence quotient, is a widely accepted measure of intelligence. The IQ score comes from several combined, standardized tests.

In 1955, Norway began extending compulsory middle school education by two years. Galloway and her colleague Christian Brinch, from the department of economics at the University of Oslo, analyzed how this additional schooling might affect IQ.

Using data on men born between 1950 and 1958, the researchers looked at the level of schooling by age 30. They also looked at IQ scores of the men when they were 19.

"The size of the effect was quite large," she said. Comparing IQ scores before and after the education reform, the average increased by 0.6 points, which correlated with an increase in IQ of 3.7 points for an addition year of schooling, Galloway said.

"We are only able to study men, because we use data on IQ from the Norwegian military's draft assessment, which basically all men undergo around the age of 19. Women are not included in the draft," she explained.

Education has lasting effects on cognitive skills, such as those broadly measured by IQ tests, Galloway said.

"Cognitive skills are, in turn, related to a large range of social and economic outcomes. A large part of the relevance of the study derives from the fact that there has been some controversy related to the question of whether education has an independent effect on IQ or whether people with higher IQs simply choose, or are better able, to attain higher levels of education," Galloway said.

By looking at a reform which increased mandatory schooling and prevented people from dropping out of school after the 7th grade, it is fairly certain that the effects seen are an effect of schooling on IQ, not vice versa, she explained.

"One subtle point of our findings is that we use IQ measures at roughly age 19, which is three to four years after the additional education generally was received. Thus, we are not simply picking up a short-lived effect that peters out shortly after people leave school," Galloway said.

The findings suggest that education as late as the middle teenage years may have a sizeable effect on IQ, but do not challenge the well-documented importance of early childhood experiences on cognitive development, according to the authors.

Robert Sternberg, a professor of psychology and provost at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, said that "these results -- that schooling has a substantial effect on IQ -- replicate those of other, perhaps not quite as well-controlled, studies."

"I am aware of no serious studies that show the opposite result," he added.

He said the results are also consistent with the huge literature on the so-called Flynn effect showing that IQs are modifiable across as well as within generations and have been rising since the beginning of the 20th century.

"The results of this study are problematical for the chorus of psychologists and educators still locked in century-old thinking that IQ is genetic, stable and non-modifiable," Sternberg said. "As, for these individuals, the belief in the stability of IQ is more a matter of religious faith than of scientific inference, I doubt they will be persuaded."

California soldier shot at his homecoming party

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) ? An Army soldier recovering from injuries suffered in a suicide bombing in Afghanistan has been shot at his homecoming party, and family members say he?s paralyzed and in critical condition.

Spec. Christopher Sullivan, 22, was shot late Friday while trying to break up a fight between his brother and another man at a San Bernardino residence.

?My son didn?t deserve this. He served his country,? his mother, Suzanne Sullivan, told the San Bernardino Sun.

Ms. Sullivan said her son suffered two gunshot wounds to his back, which shattered his spine. Family members told the newspaper that the shooting late Friday left Spec. Sullivan paralyzed and in critical condition.

Police said Spec. Sullivan?s brother and a partygoer got into an argument. When Spec. Sullivan moved to intervene, the man pulled a gun and opened fire.

The gunman fled the scene before police arrived.

Spec. Sullivan was wounded in a suicide bombing attack last year in Kandahar while serving with the 101st Infantry Division.

He suffered a cracked collar bone and brain damage in the attack and has been recovering in Kentucky, where he is stationed.

He was home on leave when the shooting occurred.

His enlistment would be complete in April, after which Spec. Sullivan had planned to come home to go to college.

Family members are calling on the shooter to surrender.

Police have not identified the suspect.

VuPoint Solutions Magic Wand PDS-ST415-VP

The VuPoint Solutions Magic Wand PDS-ST415-VP ($100 street) sounds like something that should be on the Hogwarts back-to-school recommended purchase list. But in reality (pun unavoidable), it's a portable scanner?one of the most portable available. If you need to scan on the go, and don't want to be weighted down with hardware, that alone makes it worth considering.

At 1.2 by 10.1 by 1.1 inches (HWD) and 0.4 pounds, you could argue that the PDS-ST415-VP is too big to call a magic wand. It certainly doesn't look as much like one as the PlanOn DocuPen Xtreme X05 ($369.99 direct 3.5 stars). However, both work essentially the same way for scanning. The sensor and rollers in both cases define the bottom. To scan, you start at the top of a page and sweep down, or start on the side and sweep across.

One other feature the two scanners share is that they don't need a computer to scan to. Instead they scan to memory and let you move the files to a computer later. Connect the PDS-ST415-VP by the supplied USB cable, and it will look like a USB drive to your computer so you can copy the files.

Setup and Scanning
There is not much to set up with this scanner. Just put in the two supplied AA batteries and insert a microSD or microSDHC card as memory to scan to. The only potential issue is that the scanner doesn't come with a memory card and there's no internal memory, so be sure you have one handy. According to the company, you can use cards with up to 32GB capacity.

Scanning is easy. The scanner offers one button to set it to color or black and white mode and another to set it to 300 or 600 pixels per inch (ppi). Simply choose your settings, and then scan. Just as important, there isn't much of a learning curve. I got acceptable scans starting with my first try, both for recognizing text, and for scanning photos well enough for, say, scanning an article and winding up with recognizable images in the photos.

Recognizing Text
In addition to setting up the hardware, you can optionally install Abbyy Screenshot Reader, which comes with the scanner and offers a limited ability to translate images of text into editable text. However, it's important to understand that Screenshot Reader is an OCR (optical character recognition) utility rather than a full-fledged OCR program.

The PDS-ST415-VP scans to JPG image file format. An OCR program would be able to recognize the text for at least one full file at a time. Screenshot Reader recognizes text showing on screen, and it can recognize only as much text as can fit on the screen.

Depending on your screen resolution, you may need to recognize a letter-size page of text in two or more pieces. In my tests using a 1,280 by 1024 screen resolution, for example, with the image zoomed in Photoshop to 33 percent and the text just fitting within the screen width, I had to recognize each page in three sections.

At smaller zoom sizes I could recognize more of the page, but the recognition accuracy dropped. At 33 percent zoom, the program read our Arial test page at font sizes as small as 8 points without a mistake and our Times New Roman test page at 12 points. At 12.5 percent, which is the largest zoom size that showed the full page at once, it couldn't read any font size without mistakes.

Other Issues
It's worth mention that although not needing a computer for scanning has the advantage of giving you less to carry with you, it has a disadvantage too. You can't see the scan and confirm that it's good enough to be usable until you connect to a computer, at which point you may no longer have the original handy to rescan. Depending on the situation, you may be better off skipping the scanner and taking a photo instead, so you can check the image quality on your camera or cameraphone's screen.

You can't count this too heavily against the PDS-ST415-VP, because it's pretty much standard today for portable scanners that don't need a computer, including, for example, the IRIScan anywhere 2 ($199, 3 stars) from I.R.I.S. and the Pandigital Personal Photo Scanner/Converter PanScn06 ($149.99, 3 stars). One the few exceptions is the Editors' Choice Visioneer Mobility ($199.99 direct, 4 stars), which lets you scan to a smartphone and see the results on the spot.

Despite this limitation, if you want to use a scanner rather than a camera, and you want one that's portable enough to carry with you virtually all the time, the PDS-ST415-VP is definitely in the running. When you compare prices with the alternatives, keep in mind that you'll need to buy a memory card and may want a more capable OCR program or a document management program as well. Even so, the VuPoint Solutions Magic Wand PDS-ST415-VP is a more than reasonable choice. It has little to no learning curve, it's easy to use, and its scan quality is up to the task.

Groups unite to provide bicycles for tornado victims

Published: Sunday, December 25, 2011 at 3:30 a.m.
Last Modified: Friday, December 23, 2011 at 10:04 p.m.

TUSCALOOSA | VeloCity Pro Cycle and the Druid City Bicycle Club are coordinating the Tuscaloosa Bicycle Relief initiative to collect donations of bicycles for people who lost their modes of transportation in the April storms.

Money, bicycles, helmets and locks are welcome, but the program is accepting only equipment that is in working condition. Donations can be made to Druid City Bicycle Club and shipped to VeloCity Pro Cycle at 2318 4th St. All donations are tax deductible.

Donations will be strategically awarded to recipients based on need, with those requiring transportation for work taking priority.

Organizers are also welcoming donations of bicycles for children.

Pixie Hicks, a member of Druid City Bicycle Club, noticed the visible signs of damage the tornado had left on people?s modes of transportation in the weeks after.

?Generally, I remember seeing people driving around Tuscaloosa with cars that were battered up and with tape and cardboard on them,? she said.

In an age of urban sprawl and miles of roads that separate one from home and work, the need for reliable transportation is greater than ever.

Hicks said several people in the bike club were directly impacted by the tornado. Sam Rombokas, an officer in the bike club, lost his home and his bike. He said Tuscaloosa Bicycle Relief is a natural step for the bike club.

?I guess it would be similar to people who had access to clothing stores and access to people who had donations of clothes,? he said. ?Our contribution was to replace an integral part of people?s lives, and we have found with our observations that there seems to be an increased number of bicyclists around town, not only with students, but also with people who are now riding for transportation. We suspect that is because of the hardship suffered in the form of loss of automobiles, and people have perhaps tightened their budgets to help recover from their losses.?

Rombokas was out of town when the April tornado struck his home, leveling the house and rending his Cannondale bike in two.

?We spent probably the next four weeks constantly digging through and removing bricks and walls of the chimney to find small pieces and remnants of our property,? he said. ?We kept finding things further and further away from the house. My wife eventually went to the next subdivision down and lo and behold, she finds my bicycle.?

Rombokas said he loved the bicycle, having tracked more than 5,000 miles on his Cannondale in the previous year.

Knowing Rombokas? affection for his bike, Bruce Henderson, the president of the bike club, contacted the national office of Cannondale to ask for help. Weeks later, Cannondale provided Rombokas a replacement frame for a new bike.

Henderson said he contacted local business owners to request donations of bicycles. The main task was to find the people who relied on bicycles for transportation.

?We decided to go and use social media very heavily and asked a lot of people in churches and employers in town like DCH (Regional Medical Center) to help in identifying people in need of bicycles,? he said.

Bristol-Myers liver cancer drug fails trial (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Bristol-Myers Squibb Co said on Thursday its liver cancer drug brivanib failed to meet the primary endpoint in a late-stage clinical trial.

Brivanib failed to meet the main goal of improving overall survival versus placebo in liver cancer patients who failed or are intolerant to sorafenib. Sorafenib is used to treat advanced primary liver cancer.

Bristol-Myers said three other trials, to evaluate brivanib in different liver cancer patient groups, will continue as planned.

"We remain committed to the development of brivanib as a potential treatment option for patients with liver cancer, and the ongoing study investigating brivanib 'first-line' is expected to complete in 2012," senior vice president Brian Daniels said in a statement.

Shares of the company closed at $35.09 on Thursday on the New York Stock Exchange.

Exclusive: Pakistan army wants Zardari out but not a coup (Reuters)

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) ? Pakistan's powerful army is fed up with unpopular President Asif Ali Zardari and wants him out of office, but through legal means and without a repeat of the coups that are a hallmark of the country's 64 years of independence, military sources said.

Tensions are rising between Pakistan's civilian leaders and its generals over a memo that accused the army of plotting a coup after the U.S. raid that killed Osama bin Laden in May.

"Who isn't fed up with Zardari? It's not just the opposition and the man on the street but people within the government too," said one military source who asked not to be named.

"But there has to be a proper way. No action is being planned by the army. Even if we tried, it would be very unpopular and not just with the government and the opposition but most Pakistanis too."

The Pakistani military spokesman declined comment.

General Ashfaq Kayani has pledged to keep the military out of Pakistani politics since taking over as army chief in 2007.

Any coup -- Pakistan has had three since independence in 1947 -- could further tarnish the military's public image which has already taken a battering after the bin Laden operation, widely seen in Pakistan as a violation of sovereignty.

But the army remains the arbiter of power and analysts say it has plenty of ways to pressure Zardari to step down, especially if a link is established between him and the memo, which sought the Pentagon's help in averting a feared coup.

Businessman Mansoor Ijaz, writing in a column in the Financial Times on October 10, said a senior Pakistani diplomat had asked that a memo be delivered to the Pentagon with a plea for U.S. help to stave off a military coup in the days after the raid that killed al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in May.

Ijaz later identified the diplomat as Pakistan's ambassador to Washington, Husain Haqqani, who denied involvement but resigned over the controversy. No evidence has emerged that the military was plotting a coup and the Pentagon at the time dismissed the memo as not credible.

Friction between Pakistan's civilian government and military have bedeviled the nuclear-armed South Asian country for almost its entire existence, with the military ruling for more than half its 64-year history after a series of coups.

In the past the army has asked Pakistani civilian leaders to resign and influenced judicial proceedings against them.

Haqqani's resignation was seen by many analysts as further weakening the civilian government, which is already beset by allegations of corruption and incompetence in the face of many challenges, including a weak economy and a Taliban insurgency.

MEMOGATE

Zardari returned to Pakistan this week from medical treatment in Dubai that raised speculation he would resign under pressure from the military over what has been dubbed "memogate."

Although his position is largely ceremonial, he wields considerable influence as leader of the ruling party and his forced departure would be a humiliation for the civilian leadership and could throw the country into turmoil.

One of the military sources suggested that no direct action would be needed against the government because it had already made so many mistakes.

"If the government is digging its own grave, we are not going to look for spades," the source said.

The military has reasserted itself after a November 26 NATO cross-border air attack killed 24 Pakistani soldiers and the memo has also given it political ammunition.

In a statement submitted to the Supreme Court, which is looking into a petition demanding an inquiry into who may have been behind the memo, Kayani said it was a serious matter which required an investigation.

"We want anyone involved, be they in government or elsewhere, to be punished. But it is not for us to do anything. If the army moves to do anything it would have national as well as international repercussions," said another military source.

"So that is not likely. Anything that has to be done has to be done by the Supreme Court."

Officials from Zardari's ruling party have played down friction with the military and say they don't fear a coup.

But they fear that some judges in the increasingly aggressive Supreme Court dislike Zardari and could move against him.

"I am not bothered about the army. I think they are acting very sensibly and would not derail the system at the moment," a senior ruling party leader told Reuters.

"The worry probably would be what the Supreme Court does. They look in a mood to manipulate things."

The government's anxiety over memogate was highlighted in comments made by Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani on Thursday.

"Let me make clear to you today that there are intrigues, conspiracies afoot to pack up the elected government," he said in a speech at the National Art Gallery.

Alarm over Manning defense team strategy

Joshua Roberts / Reuters

Army Pfc. Bradley Manning leaves U.S. Magistrate Court at Fort Meade, Md., on Tuesday.

By Mike Brunkermsnbc.com

Raising the hackles of some attorneys who work on transgender legal issues, defense attorneys for Bradley Manning apparently intend to make an almost novel legal argument -- that the Army private was suffering from gender identity disorder when his alleged crimes were committed -- if his case proceeds to court martial as expected.

In the first five days of Manning?s preliminary hearing at Fort Meade, Md., prosecutors and defense attorneys have both presented evidence that Manning, accused of leaking hundreds of thousands of secret government documents to the WikiLeaks website, was wrestling with gender issues in the period leading up to the publication of the documents.

The defense stated Saturday that Manning, 24, had written to one of his supervisors when he was stationed in Iraq before his arrest and said he had concluded he was suffering from gender identity disorder, which is classified as a medical disorder in the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems. He included a photo of himself dressed as a woman in the letter and said the issue was affecting his ability to do his job or think clearly.

A defense attorney and a witness also stated that Manning had created a Facebook profile and opened at least one email account using the name ?Breanna Manning,? which the attorney described as an ?alter-ego.?

As the hearing continued Tuesday, prosecutors presented testimony indicating that Manning had used another soldier?s laptop to order a book on female facial reconstructive surgery from Amazon.com that he had shipped to his Potomac address.

A search of Amazon.com for the term ?female facial reconstructive surgery? returns just one title, ?Facial Feminization Surgery: A Guide for the Transgendered Woman.?

Also Tuesday, Manning?s attorneys did little to challenge testimony by prosecution witnesses tying Manning to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange and other electronic evidence collected in the case.

Manning is charged with aiding the enemy and violating the Espionage Act. If found guilty, he could be sentenced to life in prison.

If Manning?s case does go to court martial, his attorneys will apparently be just the second defense team to attempt to use a gender identity disorder as at least a partial defense in a military case, according to Jack King, a staff attorney with the National Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys specializing in mental health issues.

The only other case on record, he said, involved Karen Davis, a Navy electrician's mate, second class, formerly known as Charles Marx, who was prosecuted in the mid-1980s ?for wearing women's clothing (a skirt, nylons, a women's blouse, a bra, women's fashion jeans, nail polish, a purse, and a wig) on numerous occasions while at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.?

In appealing her court martial in 1988, Davis' attorneys argued that such conduct was not illegal. They also stated that, while living as Marx, she had been diagnosed by several Navy psychiatrists as having gender identity disorder and that cross-dressing was therapeutic.

The military appeals court allowed her dishonorable discharge to stand for the reason that?cross-dressing was??prejudicial to good order and discipline and discrediting of the Armed Forces."

King said such a case would be unlikely today, given the greater understanding of gender identity disorder.

?Now, if a person could show that because he or she believed themselves to be a member of the opposite sex they had an irresistible impulse to cross-dress, they would in all likelihood qualify for a medical discharge,? he said.

Several attorneys who work with transgender legal issues said they were not aware of a gender identity disorder defense being raised in a civilian court, and King said it?s easy to see why not, noting that such a diagnosis ?doesn?t prevent you from knowing right from wrong.? The disorder is most often raised in criminal proceedings as part of an overall insanity defense, or by expert witnesses arguing that a defendant is so mentally damaged that he or she should be committed, he said.

And several lawyers who work with transgender clients indicated they were not happy with the direction that the Manning proceedings have taken.

?We don?t think that being transgender, if he in fact is, has anything to do with him breaking the law,? said Kylar Broadus, an attorney with the Transgender Law and Policy Institute. ?Obviously the charges are serious and we don?t want the trial to be sensationalized or detracted from by him being transgender.?

?Our opinion is there is no correlation between anything he has done and gender identity disorder,? agreed Dru Levasseur, a transgender rights attorney with Lambda Legal.

?This plays into stereotypes that are not true,? he continued. ?There are a lot of people with gender identity disorder?fighting for their lives to be respected and understood as human beings who need equal access to the law. This type of scenario just confuses the situation.?
