Smart Bionic Limbs are Reengineering the Human

There aren't enough bionic men on the planet to produce a proper stereotype. Even so, David the Farmer seems atypical. Ruddy, red-haired, and impossibly cheerful, he meets us on the ?gravel path outside his workshop. What I was expecting?a grizzled retiree limping stiffly through his daily chores?bears no resemblance to this 30-something mechanic climbing down from a massive tractor without hesitation, weaving between ATVs and scattered engine parts, moving from task to task with no evidence that he's part machine. After a few minutes, there are clues, though: He always turns on his right leg, and his pants gather around his left ankle, hinting at a limb that's slightly skeletal and decidedly nonbiological.

Today that left leg will be replaced. That's why engineers from ??ssur, one of the world's largest prosthesis-makers, drove an hour west from the company's headquarters in Reykjav?k, Iceland, to the farm where David Ingvason lives and works. David the Farmer??the nickname they've given their star prosthesis tester, though he is actually employed as a full-time, on-site ?mechanic?is one of a limited pool of amputees fitted with the Symbionic Leg: an artificial knee, ankle, and foot that are integrated into a single bionic limb.

On the farmland and surrounding terrain, in tall grass, and on moss-sprayed plains of volcanic rock, Ingvason regularly destroys his leg. He fouls the motors in muck and sludge, burns them out through unremitting use, and generally grinds one of the most sophisticated auto-adaptive devices on the planet, each one worth more than some sedans, into an inert, cybernetic paperweight. According to ?ssur's new technology search manager, Magn?s ?Oddsson, all Ingvason has to do is call and they'll hand-deliver a new limb. More often, he swings by Reykjav?k himself wearing a backup leg and asking for a repair or replacement. Whatever David the Farmer wants, he gets?the punishment he metes out to his leg, and the data that result, are simply too useful.

?ssur began selling the Symbionic model as the world's first ?commercially available bionic leg last fall. It represents a significant shift in prostheses. The traditional half-measures, the stand-ins for lost limbs and senses, are now being imbued with machine intelligence. Ingvason's leg is, in fact, a robot, with sensors that detect its environment and gauge his intentions, and processors that determine the angle of his carbon-fiber foot as it swings forward. The same approach is being applied to prosthetic arms, in which complex algorithms determine how hard to grasp a water bottle or when to absorb the impact of a fall. Vision- and hearing-based prostheses bypass faulty organs and receptors entirely, processing and translating raw sensor data into signals that the brain can interpret. All of these bionic systems actively adapt to their users, restoring the body by serving it.

Take, for example, one of the most common prosthesis failures. A mechanical knee typically goes rigid as the heel lands, supporting the user's weight, then unlocks when pressure is applied to the toe. If that toe contact comes too early the leg collapses under its owner. The Symbionic Leg isn't so easily fooled. Force sensors and accelerometers keep track of the leg's position relative to the environment and the user. Onboard processors analyze this input at a rate of 1000 times per second, deciding how best to respond?when to release tension and when to maintain it.

Since the leg knows where it is throughout each stride, achieving a rudimentary form of proprio?ception, it takes more than a stubbed toe to trigger a loose knee. If the prosthesis still somehow misreads the situation, the initial lurch of the user falling should activate its stumble-?recovery mode. Like antilock brakes for the leg, the actuators will slow to a halt, and magnetically controlled fluid in the knee will become more viscous, creating resistance, as the entire system strains to keep the person from crumpling or toppling.

The result, Ingvason says, is that he rarely falls, or no more often than someone with two biological legs. He can drive ATVs, hike across glaciers, even ride a horse while herding sheep. "I don't have to think about it," he says. Before he went bionic, Ingvason fell constantly. "With the old knee, it was every day, often more than once in a day," he says. "If I was walking and the toe hit something while swinging forward and I stepped on it, then I just went down. Now I'm walking on uneven ground and high grass and sand and mud and everything."

Ingvason's newly delivered limb is another Symbionic Leg, loaded with upgraded software that will allow the knee and the ankle to communicate with each other. ?ssur plans to develop this feature over the coming years, ?establishing what Oddsson calls networked intelligence. After putting it on, Ingvason limps, awkwardly at first, across dirt and gravel, past the rusting hulks of trucks and cars. Within a few minutes, the robot has calibrated itself.

With Ingvason's pant leg hitched up, it's impossible not to watch the limb in action. It's harsh and alien. The gray polymer shell, which partially conceals aircraft-grade aluminum, seems too skinny to support his weight; the ankle, too delicate for the 10,000 newtons of force it was built to withstand. But the leg is nimble and so quick to react, it's as though he were born with it.

Gina Carano. Remember the name.

In just three years she rose to fame as one of the world?s leading Female Mixed-Martial-Arts fighters, with a stunning, undefeated 7-win run that culminated in a now-questionable loss against an opponent who has since been caught taking steroids for her fights. Although she hasn?t fought since that controversial match, her story has far from ended in tragedy, being picked up by acclaimed director Steven Soderbergh for his latest film, Haywire, a punchy, unusually stylish production that is arguably the best debut feature she could have ever hoped for.

Masterfully tackling yet another genre, Soderbergh expertly manages an action-dominated spy thriller, defying expectations most notably in terms of the style; a classy tone, seventies-inspired score, and refreshingly unusual editing coming together to great effect ? offering up a superior backdrop with which this new kick-ass action heroine can make...

Picture

Haywire comes to Region B-locked UK Blu-ray complete with a superb 1080p video presentation in the movie?s original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.4:1 widescreen. Obviously the film has been heavily stylised according to the preferences of the director, who tends to adopt a warm, golden brown feel for the Barcelona scenes, a more drab urban touch for Dublin, and both snow-tipped-but-sunny and sweltering desert locales for the US, with lens flares readily apparent. Detail is excellent throughout, with fantastic fine object observation on the close-ups which reveal everything about the characters? faces, for good or for bad. Indeed the almost complete lack of grain/noise ? due to the HD-shot cinematography ? might take a while to get accustomed to, but only allows you to be further impressed in terms of presentation. The colour scheme has been skewed, as aforementioned, but colours still largely ring true, and are always in-line with the intended stylisation. We get few vibrant, vivid colours, but skin tones are healthy and positively glow for the most part. Blacks are strong, with excellent shadow detail, a strong plus when you consider how many darker sequences we get. This is a demo video presentation through and through, and will likely not fail to impress.

Picture score : 9

Sound

The accompanying DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track is almost as impressive, again making the most of the eclectic offering that Soderbergh has in store for you, adopting a retro seventies feel in terms of the score, and boasting some impressive effects moments. Dialogue comes across clearly and coherently throughout, often of the quiet, conversational variety, but always clear, and dominating the frontal array wherever necessary. Effects are also quite subtle and well-nuanced for the most part, the atmospherics being well-observed and creating a perpetual ambience which works well with the piece. Of course we do get some exceptional breakout moments where the more bombastic elements come into play, gunshots ranging from assault rifle to SMG to shotgun to handgun blasts offering up a broad dynamic spectrum that bounces around the surrounds observantly. Again, Soderbergh?s stylisation often leads him to blot out the effects in favour of composer David Arnold?s score, which takes over and provides a heady backing accompaniment. Overall resounding as another easily demo quality offering, this is an impressive audio presentation.

Sound score : 9

Extras

Far from packed with extra features, this release still boasts a couple of nice interview-dominated Featurette offerings.

Gina Carano in Training runs at 16 minutes in length and focuses on Carano, taking in her MMA history and showing us clips of her first match, with interviews from both the founder of Extreme Fighting and Soderbergh himself, who explains, at a roundtable discussion, what inspired him to make a Carano-centric production.

The Men of Haywire makes for a nice accompaniment, offering up a total of just over 5 minutes of interview clips taken from all the major players ? Ewan McGregor, Channing Tatum, Michael Fassbender and even Antonio Banderas.

Characters of Haywire allows us a few minutes of further insight into the characters created by Soderbergh to populate this world.

The disc is rounded off by the Original Theatrical Trailer.

Extras score : 6

Verdict

Though the story is nothing that we haven?t come across before, it?s surprising what some classy style ? refreshingly different editing and 70s retro scoring ? can do for an ostensibly standard vehicle. Oh, that and having a kick-ass female lead who can actually kick ass. Introducing MMA fighter Gina Carano to audiences worldwide, the latest film from daring director Steven Soderbergh ? who appears to be not only capable of tackling any genre he turns his hand to but also finding female lead acting talent in the least likely places ? takes Bourne, Hanna and Salt, throws in a hint of Gibson?s Payback and mixes it up in the style of Soderbergh?s earlier definition-of-cool masterpiece, Out of Sight, to remarkably effect. It's not groundbreaking. It'll never be an all-time classic. But it's taut and punchy and full of good action sequences captured in an unusual style. It gets an easy recommendation from me: you should watch this and everything else Gina Carano comes up with because she's one real-life fighter who appears to be actually capable of making the transition to mainstream movies.

On Region B-locked UK Blu-ray we get outstanding video and impressive audio, and a few nice extras to offer a hint of background detail into the production; overall fans of the film shouldn?t hold off picking this superb release up, and newcomers who appreciate decent spy thrillers, action thrillers, lead-heroine actioners and/or Soderbergh movies in general should consider this a worthy watch if not blind-buy addition to their collection. Both strangely familiar in terms of content, yet refreshingly different in terms of style, the reason why you?ll love it will still likely be because of one woman.

Gina Carano. Remember the name.Indeed after the first five minutes of this film you?ll be hard pushed to forget her.

Overall score : 8

Kevin Rushing, Former Marine, Helps Bring Gaming To Detroit

Detroiter Kevin Rushing wants to use his gaming business, Krush Industries, in order to form a tighter-knit, collaborative community for young adults in the city. But the veteran is drawing on an unlikely source: his experience in the Marines.

"A lot of this came out of my experience coming home as a civilian with PTSD and finding more therapeutic ways to live and healthier lifestyle options," said Rushing, who went to Iraq with the Marine Corps in 2003 and 2004 . "I really think of games as the absolute opposite of warfare; it's collaboration."

The business, which Rushing launched with his brother last year, "started with an idea called 'Big Fun Place.'" The siblings wanted to bring gaming to Detroiters who were looking for new forms of entertainment.

"We don't really want to party hard, drinking and smoking and stuff ... there's a lack of entertainment options for young adults that are healthy and engaging," he said. "We started coming up with events and spaces that were appropriate and cool enough for adults."

As part of their mission, Rushing and his brother recently organized punk rock dodgeball at the Russell Industrial Center, and started trying to raise funds for an assault course based on the '90s television show "Gladiators."

The Rushings also received a CAMP Detroit grant to create an installation, called the Krush Arcade Experience, that will debut at this weekend's Movement Electronic Music Festival and will appear at other city events in the future. It is an arcade machine emulator loaded with old school arcade games, in a tent filled with lights and lasers for an '80s vibe.

"We both really love Detroit and are passionately involved in making it a successful community," Rushing said.

The veteran's ideas are also backed up by recent research, which has suggested that playing video games like Tetris may minimize flashbacks and other psychological symptoms following trauma.

Though the brothers plan future Krush Industries projects, Rushing is also digging into the psychology of gaming and its role in society. He's interested in how elements of gaming, like competitions and receiving incentives for completing tasks -- such as getting points for spending money on a credit card -- can be used in daily life.

"Entertainment will have to be more engaging and thoughtful," Kevin said about his vision of the future of Krush Industries. "There's an ethical portion to this and a community-forward portion that we think will make it more than just an entertainment facility."

For Rushing, his dedication stems from his positive experience with gaming, whether in training competitions with the Marines, arcades or Gladiator challenge courses.

"The thing about playing games and competing," he said, "is you lose yourself in it."

(AP) ? The anniversary of the day 6-year-old Etan Patz vanished on his way to school dawned with his suspected killer in police custody, but it ended with a muddled portrait of the man who confessed to strangling the little boy and dumping his body in the trash.

A former neighbor who knew Pedro Hernandez as a teenager says he was someone you wouldn't want to cross ? a reserved but "pent-up" young man. But the pastor of his church says Hernandez, now 51, is simply a shy and timid man who faithfully attends Sunday services.

Now on suicide watch at Bellevue Hospital, Hernandez was arraigned Friday via video link from a hospital ward on a charge of murder. His court-appointed lawyer, Harvey Fishbein, told the judge that Hernandez is bipolar, schizophrenic and has a "history of hallucinations, both visual and auditory."

Hernandez, who was a teenage convenience store clerk at the time Etan went missing, now lives in Maple Shade, N.J. He was arrested Thursday after making a surprise confession in a case that has bedeviled investigators for 33 years. Hernandez told police he lured Etan into the basement of a convenience store with a promise of a soda, choked him to death, then stuffed his body in a bag and left it with trash on the street a block away.

The legal proceeding lasted only about four minutes. Expressionless, wearing an orange jumpsuit and handcuffs, Hernandez didn't speak or enter a plea.

A judge ordered Hernandez held without bail and authorized a psychological examination to see if he is fit to stand trial.

The prosecutor who appeared in court, Assistant District Attorney Armand Durastanti, said it was 33 years ago Friday that 6-year-old Etan Patz left his home on Prince Street to catch his school bus. "He has not been seen or heard from since. It's been 33 years, and justice has not been done in this case," Durastanti, said.

Etan disappeared on May 25, 1979, on his two-block walk to his bus stop in Manhattan. It was the first time his parents had let him walk the route by himself.

Next to the bus stop was a convenience store, where Hernandez, then 18, worked as a clerk. Police interviewed him this week, acting on a tip.

Etan's remains were never found, even after a massive search and a media campaign that made parents afraid to let their children out of their sight and sparked a movement to publicize the cases of missing youngsters. Etan was one of the first missing children to be pictured on a milk carton.

Hernandez's confession put investigators in the unusual position of bringing the case to court before they had amassed any physical evidence or had time to fully corroborate his story or investigate his psychiatric condition.

Police spokesman Paul Browne said investigators were retracing garbage truck routes from the late 1970s and deciding whether to search landfills for the boy's remains, a daunting prospect.

Crime scene investigators also arrived Friday morning at the building in Manhattan's SoHo section that once held the bodega where Hernandez worked. Authorities were considering excavating the basement for evidence.

They also were looking into whether Hernandez has a history of mental illness or pedophilia.

Browne said letting Hernandez remain free until the investigation is complete was not an option: "There was no way we could release the man who had just confessed to killing Etan Patz."

Legal experts said that even though police have a confession in hand, they are likely to work hard to make certain Hernandez isn't delusional or simply making up the story.

"There's always a concern whether or not someone is falsely confessing," said former prosecutor Paul DerOhannesian.

As Fishbein arrived at the courthouse, he asked reporters to be respectful of some of Hernandez's relatives there, including his wife and daughter.

"It's a tough day. The family is very upset. Please give them some space," Fishbein said.

Etan's father, Stanley Patz, avoided journalists gathered outside the family's Manhattan apartment, the same one the family was living in when his son vanished.

Former SoHo resident Roberto Monticello, a filmmaker who was a teenager when Patz disappeared, said he remembers Hernandez as civil but reserved and "pent-up."

"You always got the sense that if you crossed him really bad, he would hurt you," Monticello said, although he added that he never saw him hit anyone.

Monticello said Hernandez was also one of the few teenagers in the neighborhood who didn't join in the all-out search for Etan, which consumed SoHo and the city for months. "He was always around, but he never helped. He never participated," Monticello said.

Hernandez, who moved to New Jersey shortly after Etan's disappearance, suffered a back injury that has kept him on disability for years, according to police.

The Rev. George Bowen Jr., pastor at Hernandez's church in Moorestown, N.J., said he attended services regularly.

"I would judge him to be shy and maybe timid. He never got involved in anything," Bowen said.

He said Hernandez's wife, Rosemary, and daughter, Becky, a college student, went to see him Thursday morning after he was taken into police custody.

"They were just crying their eyes out," Bowen said. "They were broken up. They were wrecked. It was horrible. They didn't know what they were going to do."

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said Hernandez gave a detailed confession that led police to believe they had the right man. He also said Hernandez told a relative and others as far back as 1981 that he had "done something bad" and killed a child in New York.

PFT: Tebow and Sanchez stress competition

Alex Smith PicAP

Alex Smith raised some eyebrows this week when he used Cam Newton as an example of how great statistics from a quarterback don?t always translate to wins. Now one of Newton?s teammates is firing back.

It started when Smith got defensive about his stats, saying that he?d rather be judged by his team?s record than his passing yards.

?I could absolutely care less on yards per game,? Smith said. ?I think that is a totally overblown stat because if you?re losing games in the second half, guess what, you?re like the Carolina Panthers and you?re going no-huddle the entire second half. Yeah, Cam Newton threw for a lot of 300-yard games. That?s great. You?re not winning, though.?

There?s some validity to what Smith said there: A quarterback?s passing yardage is often dependent on the score of the game, and in most of the 49ers? games last season they were protecting leads in the second half. That?s part of the reason that Smith ranked 27th in the NFL with 196.5 passing yards a game.

But then Panthers linebacker Jon Beason took to Twitter with a valid point of his own. Beason told Smith to keep quiet about Newton, and he took a shot at Smith over the fact that the 49ers tried to sign Peyton Manning this year before settling on bringing Smith back.

?Alex smith, don?t hate on Cam Bc your stats would?ve gotten u cut if Peyton decided to come 2 San Fran.Truth b told..That?s after a 13-3 yr,? Beason wrote.

Beason is blunt, but he has a point: The 49ers tried to sign Manning, and the Panthers didn?t try to sign Manning, and the reason for that is that the 49ers aren?t as confident that Smith is their long-term answer as the Panthers are that Newton is their long-term answer.

And when Smith says to Newton, ?You?re not winning,? he seems to be suggesting that Newton is to blame for the Panthers? 6-10 record last season, and that Smith himself deserves the credit for the 49ers? 13-3 record. And that?s nonsense.

The reason the 49ers won more games than the Panthers last season was because the 49ers? defense and special teams were better than the Panthers? defense and special teams. It?s ridiculous for Smith to suggest that he did more for his team than Newton did for his team when the Panthers? offense was better than the 49ers? offense.

Smith did a fine job last season of playing not to lose by cutting down on his turnovers and avoiding mistakes on a team whose defense and special teams were among the best in the league. But Newton did an amazing job last season of arriving on the worst team in the NFL and instantly making it competitive. Beason is right: Smith shouldn?t compare himself to Newton.

If you have more ideas for formations let me know in a pm or in the OOC.

These formations are all based on different practical applications such as attacking, defending, isolation, etc, etc. Also, I'm not very creative so they are numbered instead of having cool names.

Formation One: V formation with the lead plane as the apex with the wingmen taking the sides behind him. Two wingmen on the lead's left and one on the right in alignment with him. This is a typical flight formation used in air combat.

Formation Two: V formation with the lead plane as the apex with the wingmen taking the sides ahead of him instead of behind him but still in alignment. This is better in more aggressive situations where the wingmen attack relentlessly with the flight lead attacking when able but remaining more as support and for commands.

Formation Three: ---- Formation. This formation is a straight line from left to right with the flight lead taking the second spot to the left. It is best utilized for bombing runs.

Formation Four: -_-_ Formation. This formation is again a bombing formation, but this is used when there is a higher risk of SAM attacks so not all four planes are on a single plane and have more room to maneuver.

Formation Five: Diamond formation. Flight lead is in the frontal point with the four wingmen taking the other three points. This formation is almost exclusive to air combat.

(AP) ? Driving onto an Interstate highway? Crossing a bridge on the way into work? Taking a tunnel under a river or bay? Get ready to pay.

With Congress unwilling to contemplate an increase in the federal gas tax, motorists are likely to be paying ever more tolls as the government searches for ways to repair and expand the nation's congested highways.

Tolling is less efficient and sometimes can seem less fair than the main alternative, gasoline taxes. It can increase traffic on side roads as motorists seek to evade paying. Some tolling authorities ? often quasi-governmental agencies operating outside the public eye ? have been plagued by mismanagement. And some public-private partnerships to build toll roads have drowned in debt because of too-rosy revenue predictions.

Tolls are hardly a perfect solution. But to many states and communities, they're the best option available.

"It's very hard in this environment for states to add capacity without charging a toll because they can't afford to do it," said Joshua Schank, president of the Eno Center for Transportation, a Washington think tank. "They're barely able to maintain what they've got, and there is an urgent need for capacity."

Some changes already are under way

In addition to the tolls allowed on Interstates in 15 states, mostly in the Northeast and Midwest, the U.S. has agreed to pilot toll projects on Interstate 95 in Virginia and North Carolina and on Interstate 70 in Missouri.

A commission created by Congress to recommend ways to pay for upkeep of the nation's transportation system predicted in 2009 that the U.S. will face nightmarish congestion unless it spends more. The commission estimated all levels of government were spending a cumulative $137 billion less each year than is necessary to maintain and expand the current system. Without action, there will be a $2 trillion-plus backlog by 2035, it said.

It's been nearly two decades since Congress last increased the federal gas and diesel taxes that have historically paid for highways. Meanwhile, the cost of road and bridge construction has gone up and the purchasing power of fuel taxes has declined by more than a third. Revenue is also down because people have been driving less due to the uncertain economy and because cars are becoming more fuel-efficient.

Federal and state fuel tax revenues peaked in 2007 at $72.4 billion, then dropped to $68.6 billion in 2010, the most recent year for which data are available. Meanwhile, state toll collections rose from $4.9 billion in 2000 to $8.9 billion in 2010, and locally administered tolls rose from $1.6 billion in 2000 to $2.5 billion in 2009.

The trust fund that pays for federal highway programs is forecast to go broke sometime next year, though the House and Senate are trying to negotiate a bill to shore up the funding and overhaul transportation programs. It's unclear whether they'll reach a deal, but if they do, it's likely to contain only a short-term financial fix. That means lawmakers will be back again, scratching for more.

Tolling is the easiest near-term way to pay the bills, says Robert Atkinson, who chaired the financing commission. "If you could allow modest tolling on Interstates, you could raise a lot of money," he said.

Fifteen states, mostly in the Northeast and Midwest, that had turnpikes before the 1956 advent of the Interstate system have grandfathered permission to collect tolls on 2,900 miles of the 47,000-mile system. But federal restrictions prevent other states from placing tolls on federal-aid highways except in limited circumstances.

States want Congress to increase their ability to charge tolls and to allow them to use the money for a variety of transportation needs ? not just upkeep of the roads where tolls are collected, said Eugene Conti, North Carolina's transportation secretary, at a Senate hearing last month.

But states also have a history of slapping tolls on roads traveled by a large share of out-of-state motorists. When Pennsylvania applied to put tolls on Interstate 80, a route favored by truckers, the federal government rejected the plan partly because some of the money raised would have gone to support public transit in Philadelphia, even though the highway doesn't touch the city's metro area. In 2004, Chicago leased its Skyway, an eight-mile road and bridge, to a private toll operator for 99 years in exchange for $1.8 billion that was used to pay off city debt. The resulting toll increases fell heavily on Indiana commuters who use the road to get to jobs in Chicago.

Sen. Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J., has introduced a bill to give the secretary of transportation oversight of tolling practices. The financing commission made a similar recommendation.

What to do about tolling isn't addressed in the highway bill now before Congress because of a standoff earlier this year between senators who favor and oppose easing tolling on Interstate highways. The issue is expected to be revived next year after the retirement of Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, who has led the opposition to greater tolling.

One concern is that the Interstate system is aging, which means money must be found to repair and replace the roads.

"The roads are out there and we've paid off the mortgage, but that doesn't mean the system is paid for. ... Now the roads are crumbling and we have to upgrade them," said Patrick Jones, executive director of the International Bridge, Tunnel and Turnpike Association, which represents toll facilities.

Some relaxation of the ban is in the works. The Transportation Department has selected the three states ? Virginia, North Carolina and Missouri ? for pilot toll projects.

A $2 billion project now under way would add High Occupancy Toll lanes on Interstate 495 in the Virginia suburbs of Washington. The state can't afford to build the lanes on its own, but money raised by a private investment partnership and a $586 million federal loan made the project possible.

Motorists who buy an E-ZPass that can be read electronically will be able use the lanes. Toll prices will fluctuate depending on traffic density. If toll lanes are crowded, prices will keep rising until enough motorists decide to remain in the slower lanes. The aim is to give motorists a way to travel quickly, but only if they are willing to pay for it ? an idea that has stirred controversy. Cars with three or more passengers will be able to use the lanes without paying.

The administrative costs of tolling are far greater than the gas tax, even when using electronic tolling, said Phineas Baxandall, a senior analyst with the private, consumer-oriented U.S. PIRG.

Some tolling agencies could also use "a dose of sunshine," Baxandall said. Because many are quasi-governmental, public disclosure, open meeting and other transparency rules don't always apply, he said. As a result, they frequently operate out of public sight, creating opportunities for corruption or manipulation by industry, he said.

A report by the New Jersey comptroller in March said cronyism and mismanagement at the Delaware River Port Authority had wasted millions of dollars. The authority operates four bridges, a ferry and a rail line across the Delaware River between New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey recently raised cash fares on six Interstate bridges and tunnels to $12 for cars. By 2015, it will cost a five-axle truck paying cash $105 to cross between New York and New Jersey, three times as much as for any other bridge or tunnel in the country, according to the American Trucking Association. Bill Baroni, the authority's deputy executive director, told a Senate hearing the fare hikes are necessary to make up for years of neglect and mismanagement.

Despite concerns about more and higher tolls, it's difficult for lawmakers to tell state and local governments not to pursue greater tolling when Congress isn't providing a comparable alternative source of funds.

Jones, of the tolling industry association, predicted that as traffic congestion worsens, people "are going to demand, 'We need better roads, we need more efficiency,' and they are going to ask for tolling and direct user fees to build the transportation that they need."

Doggy couch surfing? Website has lodging for dogs

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? When you travel and have to leave your dog behind, you can call a kennel, hire a pet sitter ? or find him a new friend online.

The website DogVacay debuted in New York and Los Angeles in March and, just in time for the summer travel season, is now available throughout the United States and Canada.

The site lets pet owners look up hosts in the area who will care for a dog in their own homes, giving a pet the food, exercise and attention you would give if you stayed home ? sort of a doggy version of couch-surfing, for an average price of $25 to $30 a day.

Hosts are checked out and interviewed by DogVacay and every owner and dog is encouraged to meet the host.

The Santa Monica-based company was founded by Aaron and Karine Nissim Hirschhorn. In two months it has grown to over 4,000 hosts in two countries and from five employees to 13, Hirschhorn said.

Valerie Steiger's Shih Tzu mix named Joey was just 3 months old when she had to leave for a two-week Thailand trip in February. Joey has been back four or five times since, said Steiger, whose job as a life coach keeps her on the road.

Her host has a couple of dogs and Joey enjoyed them so much, he was depressed when he got home and didn't have any playmates, Steiger said.

"She was wonderful. I was talking to Joey (through a cell phone app) from Thailand. She took pictures of Joey on an iPhone, she took a video of him zipping around with his buddy. I didn't ask for any of that. She just did it," Steiger said.

Steiger has used kennels in the past. And there are good ones, she said, but dogs are still kept in crates or cages for several hours each day. "It's like they are in jail."

Knowing where her dog is and what he's doing is important to her because "this is my baby. I'm leaving my baby behind," Steiger said.

Hirschhorn and his fiance went on a trip to visit family in 2010 and left their dogs Rocky and Rambo in a kennel. "Rocky came back a little off. She was not acting herself. She was sheepish and hiding under the desk. She is normally a happy, happy dog," he said.

There had to be something better, they said. They let everyone know they were going to start dog sitting. "Business was booming. We got multiple calls a day," he said. They watched more than 100 dogs during eight months.

At the end of their experiment, they had two things: enough money to pay for their 2011 wedding and a business model. They quit their day jobs, joined forces with former MySpace CEO Mike Jones to create an online community and raised $1 million in venture capital.

The company's website provides host bios, location, home photos, prices, availability, notes on what they can handle and reviews.

DogVacay provides insurance (up to $25,000 per animal) for emergencies, the company has a partnership with VCA Animal Hospitals and owners can rent GPS-enabled dog collars if they want to track their pets constantly. Most hosts will email, text or telephone owners once a day with updates on their dogs, Hirschhorn said.

About a third of the hosts are professional pet care providers while two-thirds are casual dog lovers who might be retired, unemployed, stay-at-home moms or veterans, Hirschhorn said. Nine out of 10 hosts have their own dogs.

Hirschhorn wouldn't divulge the number of stays logged in the first two months, but said about half of all boarders are repeat customers.

DogVacay takes credit cards for payment when reservations are made, then pays the hosts.

Interviews and security checks by DogVacay and meet-and-greets with host and owner are designed to overcome concerns about adjusting to the new environment.

"If they don't want to check me out, it means they don't care about their dog very much," said host Lauren Meyer.

Meyer has a 2,500 square-foot home in a quiet neighborhood in Los Angeles and charges $38 a night. She has always had older, larger dogs with medical problems, so she's not afraid to keep dogs with special needs, she said.

The biggest problem for the Hirschhorns is keeping up with demand and updating the website with new features, he said.

DogVacay has a concierge, a customer service representative who can help if there is a problem or if someone can't navigate the website.

Personal dog chef Danielle Rapin of Brooklyn, N.Y., has been hosting for three months for $40 a night. She has had four boarders so far, but has six meet-and-greets lined up in the next two weeks as people prepare for summer vacations.

DogVacay has been good for her 4-year-old mini-Greyhound mix too, she said. A 12-pound rescue, Baci once had to fend for herself on the streets, so didn't have much time for socialization.

But she has turned into a remarkable hostess. "It's been rewarding to see her develop," Rapin said.

For the Hirschhorns, dogs may be just the beginning. They own the domain names for a variety of vacays, including pet, animal, cat, iguana, bird, hamster, rabbit and snake.

Fire beetles may revolutionize early-warning systems for forest fires

ScienceDaily (May 23, 2012) ? Black fire beetles of the genus Melanophila possess unusual infrared sensors. It seems that they use these to detect forest fires, even from great distances, since their wood-eating larvae can only develop in freshly burned trees. Scientists have been wondering for a long time how sensitive these biological IR sensors really are. Researchers from the University of Bonn and from the Forschungszentrum J?lich have concluded that the beetles' sensors might even be more sensitive that uncooled infrared sensors designed by humans. Having this natural model opens up new perspectives, such as for early warning systems for forest fires.

The results have been published in PLoS ONE, an online journal of the Public Library of Science.

Criminal cases can often only be solved using forensics to piece together physical evidence and reconstruct what happened. Prof. Dr. Helmut Schmitz from the Institute of Zoology at the University of Bonn and Dr. Her?bert Bousack from the Peter Gr?nberg Institut at the Forschungszentrum J?lich went through the same experience. Prof. Schmitz has been researching fire beetles of the genus Melanophila and their sophisticated IR sensors, which these pyrophilous insects use to detect forest fires, for many years. This is a very special ecological niche. "It allows the beetle larvae to freely eat their way through the wood because the trees, which have been killed by great heat, can no longer fight back, and there are hardly any predators that would eat them in freshly burned forests," the Bonn zoologist reported.

A tiny sphere senses changes in pressure due to heat

Meanwhile, with the help of the Forschungszentrum caesar in Bonn and the Technische Universit?t Dresden, the researchers have unraveled the functional principle of this so-called photo-mechanical beetle infrared sensor, and they have started to work on a technical reconstruction of this natural prototype. Tiny cuticula spheres of the beetles' IR receptors ? at 0.02 mm, smaller than the diameter of a fine hair ? are filled with water and absorb IR radiation very well. Due to the fact that they heat up, the water in particular expands suddenly, and the resulting change in pressure is immediately detected by highly sensitive mechano-sensitive sensory cells. "However, an important question had remained unanswered ? how sensitive is the sensor?" asked Prof. Schmitz. This question could be best answered by equipping Melanophila beetles with mini transmitters on their search for forest fires. "Then we would be able to log the distance flown to the burnt area and, based on this distance, calculate the minimum required heat radiation the beetles are attracted by," explained the zoologist. But at a length of about 1 cm, the beetles are too small to carry a transmitter for long distances.?

In 1925, a blaze destroyed a large oil storage facility in California

The resourceful scientists turned to a past event, which proved helpful. In August 1925, a large oil depot in Coalinga, California, went up in flames. "Reports from that era mentioned that the huge blaze attracted masses of charcoal beetles (Melanophila consputa)," explained Prof. Schmitz. Since the fire location was in the forest-less Central Valley of California, the beetles must have flown in from a great distance. Most likely, they came from large forests on the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada about 130 kilometers away, where there had been large forest fires in the two preceding years. "On such burnt areas, beetles multiply en masse, and after they emerged, they went to look for forest fires in the subsequent summers," said Prof. Schmitz. A forested area about 28 kilo?meters from the burning oil tanks in the San Benito Mountain Natural Area north of Coalinga seems rather unlikely as the source of the beetles since forest fires had not been reported in this area prior to 1925.

Based on a model from fire protection technology

Dr. Herbert Bousack, an engineer from the Peter Gr?nberg Institut at the Forschungszentrum J?lich performed the calculations for modeling the sensitivity of the sensor. "The Coalinga fire is a good match for this simulation," Dr. Bousack reported. First however, many parameters had to be researched painstakingly, such as the size of the fire, or the weather conditions. "More than 85 years after the event, such data was hard to obtain." The engineer based his mathematical simulation on various fire models such as are used in assessing of fire risks for storage tank facilities. "We adapted these technical guidelines for our purposes, which allowed us to fall back on proven experiences," said the engineer.

According to the math, the beetle sensor is incredibly sensitive

The result was amazing. "According to our calculations, the infrared sensors of Melanophila beetles should be able to sense signals even if they are below the level of thermal noise," reported Dr. Bousack. Obviously, the beetles rely on stochastic resonance. "This method enables them to detect weak periodic signals that are normally superimposed by the noise," explained the engineer. According to the results of the calculations, the sensors can detect the tiniest amounts of heat - roughly comparable to the energy resolution of radio telescopes. "Our simulations and calculations make it seem quite probable that the IF sensors of pyrophilous Melanophila beetles are more sensitive than uncooled infrared sensors currently available in the market," Prof. Schmitz summarized the outcome. "Additional efforts to implement this natural prototype technologically will be required." So, they might be able to revolutionize early-warning systems for forest fires.
