Types of Short Term Disability Insurance Available

Article Directory :: Health & Fitness Articles

Short term disability insurance covers a portion of an individual's salary in the event that a disabling injury or illness makes them temporarily unable to continue working. Like any other type of insurance offered by agencies, there are many different types of short term plans available to suit individual needs.

Group short term disability insurance is provided by many employers with the dual purpose of caring for employees, and ensuring that the workforce operates as smoothly as possible. Since the employer decides on the conditions of the policy, the employee may have little, or no, say in the benefits chosen. This type of insurance is less expensive than an individual policy.

Individual short term disability insurance is designed for self-employed individuals, or workers whose employers do not provide benefits, to be able to purchase their own coverage. Although it generally costs more than group coverage, it allows an individual to choose policy details that best suit their needs, as opposed to going with what is best for everyone as a whole. A healthy medical record makes it easier to qualify for this type of policy, and can affect the overall monthly premiums.

Voluntary short term disability insurance is a payroll-deducted plan that allows an employee to select individual benefits when group plan does not provide them the coverage needed. It usually requires a waiting period before providing weekly income benefits. This type of plan has all the positive points of group and individual plans, with the added benefits that the coverage generally includes maternity health insurance, and coverage continues if the employee leaves the organization.

Infertility health insurance covers the high costs involved with artificial reproductive techniques, monitoring of high-risk pregnancies, treatment costs during pregnancy, and other associated treatments. Although most health plans include a certain amount of infertility coverage, it is usually limited. Therefore, it a good idea for couples who are experiencing problems to look into this type of plan. These treatments are complicated and expensive, which is generally reflected in the month premiums of these types of insurance plans.

Each of these types of policies may differ regarding the coverage they offer, the amount of time they cover, and amount you will pay, depending on the company you choose. Therefore, once you have decided which one you are interested in, it is a good idea to speak with an insurance agent about the particulars. That way you will be sure to get the plan you need, at the price you can afford.
