A whisker-inspired approach to tactile sensing

ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2012) ? Inspired by the twitching whiskers of common rats and Etruscan shrews, EU-funded researchers have developed rodent-like robots and an innovative tactile sensor system that could be used to help find people in burning buildings, make vacuum cleaners more efficient and eventually improve keyhole surgery.

Sensor systems that replicate the sense of touch have been the focus of increasing research in recent years, largely for robotics applications. But the focus has normally been on developing sensors that in some way or another replicate the way humans touch and sense the world: with our skin and particularly our fingertips.

'The main reason people explored fingertip-like sensors is because we have fingertips, but any kind of tactile sensor has to interact with objects and surfaces -- and fingertips have a big problem with wear and tear,' explains Tony Prescott, a professor of Cognitive Neuroscience at the University of Sheffield in the United Kingdom.

Nature, however, has devised a much more robust, and often much more sensitive, kind of tactile sensing device: whiskers.

'If you look at the natural world, almost all mammals except humans have whiskers -- it's actually us that have lost them. Whiskers are a natural way to sense things with touch,' Prof. Prescott says.

And, it turns out, just like their biological counterparts, artificial whiskers offer some big advantages over other approaches to tactile sensing as Prof. Prescott and a team of researchers from seven countries have proved in the Biotact (1) project. Supported by EUR 5.4 million in research funding from the European Commission, the researchers studied rats and mice, tiny Etruscan shrews and other mammals and attempted to replicate the way they use their whiskers, or 'vibrissae', to sense their environment, detect objects and follow prey.

Their work has led to the development of an active vibrissal tactile sensor array and a series of rat-like robots that can move around by touch alone. The technology could potentially be used commercially for applications as diverse as search and rescue, consumer appliances, product testing or medicine.

'To begin with we had to understand how mammals use their whiskers. Around one third of the project was therefore dedicated to behavioural neuroscience, including filming rats and shrews using high-speed cameras to see how they use their whiskers whilst monitoring patterns of neural activity,' Prof. Prescott, the Biotact project coordinator, explains.

The team then worked out how to replicate natural vibrissal sensing in an artificial system. Their system works by measuring the vibration at the base of the shaft of a whisker caused by it coming into contact with an object or surface. Miniature motors enable individual whiskers or arrays of hundreds of whiskers to be moved and brushed against objects in much the same way that rodents move their whiskers back-and-forth at high speed. Software and powerful processing algorithms analyse the feedback from the whiskers to determine, for example, whether a surface is rough or smooth, if there is a corner or wall, how far away an object is or even if an object is moving.

For rodents, most of which have poor eyesight, active control of the whiskers allows the animal to accurately position the tip of the whiskers as well as control how the whisker moves in order to gain as much information as possible about an object or surface. In this way, they can rely on touch alone to explore and even hunt for food.

Robust robotic rodents for search and rescue

Applied to robotic devices, this same kind of active sensing approach greatly improves the accuracy and effectiveness of the sensors, enabling a robot to delicately feel its way around, rather than clumsily bumping into objects. In addition, while finger-like robotic probes can easily be damaged because the sensing components are directly exposed to the environment, with the Biotact technology the delicate electronic components are at the base of the whisker and do not come into direct contact with objects or surfaces. And artificial whiskers, just like their natural counterparts, continue to function even if they are broken or damaged, and they can be cheaply and easily replaced.

Several generations of sensors and robots developed by the Biotact team prove just how effective the approach can be. Shrewbot, the latest incarnation, looks a little like its namesake and can navigate its way around by touch alone.

'Shrewbot can even follow a moving object simply by using its whiskers. It has no visual sensors or any other type of sensing device,' Prof. Prescott says. 'Because the Biotact artificial whisker is modular, it can be used for a lot of different robots and devices, we've used it with a range of educational robots including the Lego Mindstorms robot, we have also produced a miniaturised version that uses a new kind of polymer-based actuator to move the whiskers.'

'We wanted to ensure that these sensors can be used as universally as possible, so you could go into a store and buy one much like you can buy a webcam today and mount it on any robot or any device,' Prof. Prescott adds. 'At the moment, the price of the technology is still relatively high, but we envisage that coming down over time and we've talked to some manufacturers -- there's definitely interest in this.'

Indeed, the range of applications for the technology is extensive. A Shrewbot-like robot could be used, for example, to help fire-fighters find people in burning buildings or other environments, where smoke, dust or darkness impede visual sensing. An aquatic version, which members of the Biotact team are looking to develop in a planned follow up project, could be used to inspect murky underwater environments.

'Instead of rats and shrews, it would be more like seals and walruses which also use their whiskers underwater,' the project coordinator says. 'Companies involved in nuclear decommissioning have expressed interest in this as they need devices that can inspect nuclear waste ponds, there are also potential applications in the oil-industry and in underwater archaeology.'

In medicine, vibrissal sensors could eventually, after further research, provide highly sensitive tactile feedback to doctors performing keyhole surgery, detecting different kinds of tissues or bone for example. In manufacturing, the sensing technology could be used to test product quality or sort products by analysing the texture of materials. And in vacuum cleaners, the system could automatically detect different surfaces and switch settings to ensure the most effective cleaning, depending on whether a floor is tiled or carpeted.

In a slightly different application of the sensing and actuator technology developed in Biotact, the University of Sheffield is currently working with South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue to develop a helmet for fire fighters that combines ultrasound sensors for navigation in smoke-filled environments with actuators to provide tactile feedback to the wearer.

Biotact received research funding under the European Union's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) as part of the Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) sub-programme. The results from Biotact illustrate how this type of long-term, foundational research can lead to research in other areas and use the techniques to solve problems elsewhere.

Flags leave Banning football coach McTyer upset

Coach says officials were inconsistent in Pilots' 61-12 loss to Cathedral.

After suffering through a 61-12 drubbing at home Thursday night by Cathedral, Banning coach Tim McTyer saved his harshest criticism for the officials.

"It seems like no matter what we do, whether we're hitting too hard or not hitting properly, they're calling something phantom," McTyer said. "But it's not (called) both ways. And it's hard because every week you're going to get a different set of refs who have a different emphasis on each thing. Each week, you prepare for something and fix something ... their emphasis is on something else."

McTyer, who said the Pilots were victims of several such hits, was upset about a personal foul penalty called on one of his defensive players in the first half that helped lead to a Cathedral touchdown. In the fourth quarter, McTyer ran to the middle of the field to protest and scream at two officials after a Cathedral defender made what he believed to be a similar hit on one of his players. No penalty was called.

His heated exchanges with the game's officials led to a verbal confrontation between the coach and the umpire after the game.

"Great job today," McTyer said, tongue-in-cheek.

Still, the officials couldn't have prevented Cathedral from hammering the Pilots (0-2). The Phantoms (2-0) pounded them in the second quarter and rolled the rest of the way. After playing Cathedral even and finishing with a 6-6 tie after one quarter, the Phantoms, one of many programs to benefit from St. Bernard's

decision to skip varsity football this season, blew the contest open with a 30-point blitz in the second.

Miscues and an injury to wide receiver Iakopo Moaaliitele contributed to the Pilots' demise. Their inability to stop the Phantoms' offense, particularly the Pilots' poor pass defense, which resulted in Cathedral receivers frequently getting open in the secondary.

Banning's first mistake occurred when it lined up for a punt near midfield early in the second quarter. But the snap from center sailed over the head of punter Jessie Montes de Oca with just 24 seconds gone in the second quarter, as Cathedral recovered on the Banning 14.

Quarterback Hayden Rettig, who threw seven touchdowns, five of them in the first half, hit wide receiver Cameron Akins about a minute later for a 14-6 Cathedral lead and the rout was on.

Banning quarterback Sergio Ramirez was his team's leading rusher with 70 yards on 16 carries. He completed 14 of 29 passes for 182 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Heart Disease Stroke And Obesity | Diet and Fitness Diaries

Obesity is defined as having too much body fat. The body consists of water, fat, protein, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals. When there is too much fat, you are at higher risks for health problems such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.

When you are obese, you magnify your risk for heart disease. When there is excess body fat it raises your cholesterol and triglyceride levels. It raises your blood pressure and can lead to diabetes. In some cases for people with diabetes, they have doubled their risks for a major heart attack or stroke.

Obesity is caused by having more calories consumed, than are burned with physical activity, whether from daily activity or exercise. When there is a great deal of calories consumed, with too much saturated fat and cholesterol, the levels of cholesterol in the blood rises. This increases the risks for heart disease.

Determine If You Are Obese:

Body fat is measured by waist circumference and by body mass index. The high-risk waistline is more than 35 inches for women and more than 40 inches for men.

The body mass index assesses the body weight in comparison to the height. It is a method to measure the body?s composition in correlation to the body fat. It is calculated by taking the body weight in pounds divided by the height in inches squared then multiplying it by 703.

The National Center for Health Statistics has the following levels for mass body index calculations:

18.5 is considered underweight.

18.5 ? 24.9 is considered healthy.

25.0 to 29.9 is considered overweight. This is generally 10over the ideal body weight.

30.0 or greater is considered obese.

Extreme obesity is defined as a body mass index of 40 or greater.

Here are some suggestions to reduce or prevent obesity:

1. Add physical activity to your daily routine. Adults need to have at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity three or four times a week. Children need to have at least 60 minutes the same amount of times a week.

2. Reduce time watching television or sedentary activities including time on the computer or playing video games.

3. Create opportunities for physical activity at work as well as home.

4. Promote healthier choices of food serving five to nine servings of fruit and vegetables every day.

5. Reduce the portions of the food consumed. Avoid ?supersized? meals and value meals with larger portions.

Taking steps to avoid or reduce the chances of obesity has many benefits for everyone. The fact of living a healthy longer life is incentive to work on the weight issues leading to heart disease and other health related issues. Americans have the highest rate in the world for heart disease based on the amounts of people that are overweight.

Online Plus Size Clothing For Women: Convenient or Not? | Jackie's ...

As a plus size woman myself, I always find it challenging to shop for clothes in plus sizes. Why? Let me fill you in about it!

It always seem like the variety is poor, the material is stretchy but not the most appealing, the fashion seems for appropriate for older women than younger ones and the right size is often not available.

Does it mean that online shopping may be easier to do then shopping in local stores? Here are a few things to consider before choosing what is the best way for you to shop and find what you really want to wear?for all types of occasions.

Disadvantages of shopping in person

Here are the kinds of disadvantages that I have noticed about shopping in local stores.

1. The quantity of stores offering an inventory of plus size clothing for women is often limited and they are usually located far apart.

2. When a department store is offering a plus size clothing section, the sizes that are usually available do not have a lot of depth and the amount of clothes in each size is quite limited.

3. When you are shopping in a store that offers a plus size section amongst regular size clothing, you often feel embarrassed to browse in that section.

4. Because of the limited depth in the sizing chart of stores offering plus size apparel, you often end up spending a lot of time trying different items before either finding what you want or settling for something else that may not be fitting as nicely or be as comfortable as desired.

5. The fashion offered in plus sizes often seem fit for older women and ignore younger tastes and designers? names are limited.

6. I often came to the negative conclusion that plus size clothing for women is usually more expensive than regular sizes.

7. The inventory and selections are often very limited, especially in a store offering only a section of plus size apparel compared to a boutique specializing in plus sizes.

8. The type of material use for plus size clothing for women is usually similar or identical to the material used in maternity clothes which is not always flattering or displaying high quality.

Advantages of shopping in person

Here are the kinds of advantages that someone can benefit from when shopping a local stores.

1. What you see is what you get!

2. You can try the clothes on before purchasing them.

3. You can own and wear your new clothing item right away.

4. You can choose a variety of types of payment.

5. You can get some advice either from a friend or a salesperson.

6. There are no extra charges for delivery.

Disadvantages of shopping online

Here are the kinds of disadvantages of shopping online.

1. What you see on a photographed model or in a picture may not look the same on you or when you receive it.

2. You better know your size as you are unable to try it on before purchasing it.

3. You have to wait for your plus size apparel to be delivered to wear it.

4. You only have one option concerning the type of payment?credit cards.

5. Advice may not be easy to give or receive as you are not trying on the outfit to make a decision about it.

6. Shipping and / or delivery represent extra costs on top of the price of the plus size clothing item purchased.

Advantages of shopping online

Here are the kinds of advantages of shopping online.

1. The quantity of online stores offering an inventory of plus size clothing for women is higher and they are usually located at your fingertips while shopping in the comfort of your own home.

2. When an online department store is offering a plus size clothing section, the sizes that are usually available have a lot of depth and the amount of clothes in each size is higher as well.

3. When you are shopping online that offers a plus size section amongst regular size clothing, you don?t feel embarrassed to browse in that section as nobody is staring at you.

4. Because of the sizing chart offered by online stores selling plus size apparel, you are able to either browse in your size if you know your measurements or use their measurement tips to enable you to take your own. This way, you can be sure that your clothes with fit you properly and that you will feel comfortable wearing them as well.

5. The fashion offered in plus sizes are made available in models that will satisfy women of any age range. Also, you can find a great variety of designers? names as well.

6. No matter what size you may be looking for, sales and good prices are also part of the deal when shopping online.

7. The inventory and selections offered are excellent despite the fact if it is a store that offers a plus size section or if it is one specialized in plus size clothing for women.

8. The type of material use for plus size clothing for women is usually of higher quality which will look more flattering and pleasing to both the eye and the touch.

Now that you have read the advantages and disadvantages of both shopping in local stores and online, you can make a decision more easily as you are now aware of quite a few aspects of shopping for online plus size clothing for women. Now what will be your answer to the question: ?Convenient or not??

As a plus size woman myself, I wish to share with you the pros and cons of shopping in local stores versus online. If you wish to read more information concerning plus sizes, I invite you to visit our site: http://plus-sizes.findoutnow.org

Republicans ready to roll, but Isaac clouds tone

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? For the thousands of Republican convention-goers who've been cooling their heels in Tampa, the party is finally on. But with New Orleans and much of the Gulf Coast waiting fearfully to see where a massive storm makes landfall, politics has become an awkward enterprise and no one knows what sort of party it will turn out to be.

At least for now, the Republican National Convention will go on Tuesday according to its latest script: delivering Mitt Romney the presidential nomination he fought years to achieve, calling the party to unify around him and setting the stage for the final stretch of the hotly contested campaign to unseat President Barack Obama.

Romney was coming to Tampa on Tuesday, in time to see his wife's speech in the evening, although it was kept a mystery whether he would attend the convention before his big address Thursday night.

The high campaign season opens with Romney and Obama about even in the last of the pre-convention polls, with each candidate possessing distinct and important advantages. The Democrat is the more likable or empathetic leader; the Republican is more highly regarded as the candidate who can restore the economy, the top issue for voters.

Ann Romney's convention speech was designed to speak to that divide. It was an important part of the GOP's effort to flesh out her husband and present him to the nation as more than a successful businessman and the former Republican governor of a Democratic state, Massachusetts.

Isaac, the intensifying tropical storm bordering on a hurricane, skirted Tampa, a big relief for convention organizers worried about the safety of the host city and GOP delegates. But they remain saddled with the question of how to proceed with a political festival ? one devoted both to scoring points against Obama and firing up excitement for Romney ? under the shadow of a dangerous storm crawling toward the Gulf Coast.

Organizers essentially cut Monday from the schedule, calling the convention to order just long enough to recess it, and shoehorned their four-day showcase into the remaining three days. But even that was subject to change, depending on Isaac's whims.

Republicans plainly had more at stake in their convention week ? Democrats meet next week in Charlotte, N.C. ? but the Obama campaign also had to recalibrate its tactics as Gulf residents fled their homes or hunkered down. Vice President Joe Biden was called off a Romney-bashing trip to Florida. On Monday, the president worked on preparations for the storm, declaring a state of emergency in Louisiana, speaking with governors and directing federal officials to coordinate disaster relief with state and local officials along the Gulf Coast.

That's not to say partisanship has subsided with Isaac's gathering strength. Hardly.

Obama heads to Iowa on Tuesday as the first stop on a campaign trip in which he will make a personal appeal to college voters in three university towns: Ames, Iowa; Fort Collins, Colo.; and Charlottesville, Va.

On Twitter Monday night, Obama circulated a quotation from Women's Health Magazine suggesting that Republicans would take away women's right to contraception, which the Romney campaign denies. "Crazy as it sounds, the fight to limit or even ban birth control is a key issue in the upcoming presidential election," it said.

And Republicans made clear that Obama's performance is very much fair game for the convention. Reince Priebus, the Republican chairman, may have gone beyond Romney's comfort zone on that front when he told "CBS This Morning" that "we need to prosecute the president who seems to be in love with the sound of his own voice."

The suggestion of criminal proceedings against a president, however rhetorical, was a step beyond the ordinary, and Russ Schriefer, Romney's chief convention planner, appeared to dissociate himself from the remark. "I wouldn't define it that way and I wouldn't look at it that way," he told a news conference. "What we would want to do is define what President Obama has done over the last four years, how and why he's failed, and how his leadership has really failed the American people."

In a sign of just how stage-managed these conventions have become, the never-dull New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie did something he rarely does before a speech ? wrote down a full text ? as he prepared to deliver the keynote address Tuesday night. "They want you to work off a full text and that's fine," he told MSNBC. "I think my challenge up there is gonna be to be natural and be myself."

In the same interview, Christie pounced on Todd Akin, the Senate Republican candidate in Missouri who set off sparks with his inflammatory remark that a woman's body has a way of preventing pregnancy in cases of "legitimate rape." Romney is still trying to tamp down that distraction and get people thinking about the economy, not Republican abortion policy.

"In the end, these other guys don't matter," Christie said. "They're background noise ? Todd Akin in Missouri, who's a joke and should get out of the race and everybody knows it, except for him apparently."

Romney managed to stir up the pot over abortion, if briefly, when he said in a CBS interview that he opposes abortions except "in the case of rape and incest, and the health and life of the mother." Any exceptions made solely on the basis of a woman's health have drawn particularly fierce criticism from abortion foes for years, because they argue such an exception is so broad as to do nothing to limit the procedure.

But Romney's aides quickly said he wasn't, in fact, advocating an exemption for a woman's health. "He opposes abortion except for cases of rape, incest and where the life of the mother is threatened," said Andrea Saul, a spokeswoman. Still, his comment underscored his difference of opinion on the subject with his running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, as well as with his own convention platform, which opposes all abortions.

With the economy seen as Romney's strong suit, and Obama's economic record considered a fat target in a time of persistent unemployment over 8 percent, Republicans, both from the stage and the floor, want to keep a laser focus on the subject.

"We've got to make the case that he is uniquely qualified in this hour," said Sen. Roger Wicker, R-Miss., interviewed in the hall. "This week is about convincing the 10 percent of undecided voters that Romney has always been called to come out and fix broken organizations."

Even so, there were unmistakable if gentle nudges from Republicans who say it is also vital for Romney to broaden his appeal.

"This is Romney's threshold moment," Sen. Olympia Snowe, R-Maine, wrote in The Washington Post. "He must demonstrate that he would follow the example of other Republican presidents in addressing issues important to women."

An AP-GfK poll of registered voters conducted from Aug. 16-20 found Obama leading Romney 50 percent to 44 percent among women. That represented a narrowing of the gap by Romney since a survey in May, when the president led 54-39 among female voters.

Romney trailed badly among another key group. A Gallup poll taken between July 30 and Aug. 1 found Obama winning 60 percent support among Hispanic voters, and the Republican at 27 percent, little different from 64-29 earlier in the year.

Among seniors, the group most affected by a Medicare debate that has become central to the campaign, Romney led Obama by a margin of 52 percent to 42 percent in the recent AP-GfK poll. That was compared with 53-40 in May.

Kacsmar: Green Bay's offense doesn't need Benson

Adding a 1,000-yard rusher who can't catch and lacks speed hardly helps Packers

By Scott Kacsmar

NBCSports.com

updated 3:07 a.m. ET Aug. 28, 2012

Think back to two moments from the 2005 NFL Draft: Cedric Benson?s tearful outburst when he was chosen No. 4 pick overall by the Chicago Bears, and Aaron Rodgers sitting in the green room for hours, waiting to hear his name called.

Rodgers did not cry, or at least ESPN did not capture any tears in what had to be a difficult moment. But good things come to those who wait, and Green Bay selecting Rodgers 24th overall was a blessing in disguise.

Seven years later, Rodgers and Benson unite for what will likely be the starting backfield in Green Bay?s offense.

Their first game together last Thursday night in Cincinnati was successful, with Benson carrying the ball six times for 38 yards. However, the Packers? leading rusher was actually Rodgers with six carries for 52 yards and a pair of touchdowns on scrambles.

When Rodgers recently said the Packers need to show they can run the ball, it is unlikely he had himself in mind. His stance has taken on a much different tone from July when he replied ?Do we need to?? when asked about being able to run the ball.

His initial response was the right one. After one of the most prolific offensive seasons in NFL history, why would you start delegating to a player with a checkered past like Benson? Coach Mike McCarthy has history and great results on his side to avoid just that.

Green Bay?s unique QB-driven offense
Quarterbacks want the ball in their hands, and McCarthy puts the ball in Rodgers? hands often.

Rodgers averages 39.4 drop backs per start (passes, sacks and runs), which is the second highest average in NFL history (min. 60 starts). As shown in Table 1, only Daunte Culpepper has averaged more.

Highest average of drop backs per start

Rank Quarterback Games started Drop backs
1 Daunte Culpepper 100 39.6
2 Aaron Rodgers 62 39.4
3 Donovan McNabb 161 39.3
4 Aaron Brooks 90 39.1
5 Drew Bledsoe 193 39.1
6 Randall Cunningham 135 39.0
7 Jon Kitna 124 38.9
8 Drew Brees 153 38.8
9 Warren Moon 203 38.2
10 Kurt Warner 116 37.7

Brett Favre averaged 38.6 drop backs per start in two seasons under McCarthy (2006-07). Running this type of offense in Vince Lombardi's era would have been blasphemy, but football has evolved dramatically.

Packers don?t need no stinkin? run game
The Packers' rushing issues the last four season aren't a secret. But does this matter in today?s NFL?

If you have an elite quarterback, you can consistently win without a running game. Whether it?s rushing for under 100 yards or not exceeding 30 carries, the teams with the very best quarterbacks are the ones that still win those types of games.

Of course, what separates Rodgers from the other elite quarterbacks is the way he takes matters into his own hands in the running game, scrambling for yards to inflate his team?s rushing statistics. That is why it?s good to remove quarterback carries from a team?s rushing stats to get a better sense of their intended ground game (handoffs only).

When you remove Rodgers from the stats, the results of Green Bay?s rushing offense are not pretty. In his 68 career starts (including playoffs), the Packers only average 21.9 carries for 88.2 yards (4.02 yards per carry). In spite of the running game, their record is 45-23 (.662).

In fact, no matter what Green Bay does on the ground, Rodgers usually plays at a high level, as seen in Table 2.

Rodgers' passing stats vs. rushing production

Rush yards Record Att. Comp. Pct. Yds. YPA TD INT Rating
125+ 8-2 311 198 63.7 2,562 8.24 19 6 101.8
100-124 9-3 375 259 69.1 3,245 8.65 26 5 113.3
75-99 14-3 603 411 68.2 5,143 8.53 52 9 111.4
60-74 9-8 554 349 63.0 4,461 8.05 36 14 99.3
<60 5-7 431 273 63.3 3,407 7.90 23 7 98.8

When Green Bay rushed for a season-high 138 yards against Oakland last year, it was the first game all season where Rodgers did not have a passer rating over 100.0. It was also the first time he did not complete at least 60 percent of his passes. Rodgers was 17 of 30 (56.7 percent) with a 96.7 passer rating.

So much for the ?running game opening up the passing game? theory.

If the Packers fail to even average 3.0 YPC (13 games), Rodgers still has a 103.6 passer rating. When they average over 5.0 YPC (11 games), which is supposed to signify great rushing, Rodgers has a 100.8 passer rating.

See the big picture? No matter what Green Bay does on the ground, the Packers win and lose depending on Rodgers and the defense. His passing performances are still usually great and independent of their rushing ability.

Initial evidence points to the running game and passing game being independent of each other. If an offense wants to be one-dimensional, it can be successful as long as they have the right talent and mindset for it like Green Bay.

Why do you think many of the best running backs ? such as Adrian Peterson, Maurice Jones-Drew, and Chris Johnson ? have been on some of the worst offenses in the league in recent years?

Likewise, we keep seeing teams excel in the passing game without any real threat of the run, such as the Super Bowl champion New York Giants. The Packers have been doing it for years under McCarthy.

Convention protesters try to arrest Condi Rice

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? Police in Tampa stopped a dozen anti-war protesters from entering an event attended by former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice after the group said it intended to arrest her for war crimes.

The protesters from Code Pink carried handcuffs Tuesday and tried to enter a performing arts center. Rice was attending an event in conjunction with the Republican National Convention. They said they wanted to make a citizen's arrest of Rice. She was George W. Bush's National Security Adviser when the Iraq War started in 2003.

Officers told protesters to leave because they were on private property. They went back to the sidewalk and several lay down under sheets made to look like they were blood-splattered.

The group says it will try to arrest other members of the George W. Bush administration.

SPIN METER: Debt clock has dual message

(AP) ? As Republican Party Chairman Reince Priebus gaveled the party's convention to order Monday, he also set in motion a debt clock, a theatrical flourish designed to remind Americans just how rapidly the government's tide of red ink is mounting under President Barack Obama.

It may also be an unintended reminder that the GOP's presidential candidate, Mitt Romney, has yet to say in any detail what he would do about it.

The clock Priebus started on Monday is totaling debt the government accumulates during the convention.

A second debt clock, which started running earlier, displays the total national debt, which now stands at $15.9 trillion. Priebus vowed that on Romney's first day in office, the new president would "take immediate action to cut federal spending and bring the debt under control."

So far in the campaign, Romney has promised to cut income tax rates across the board, including for the wealthiest households. He says he would pay for the cuts by eliminating unspecified deductions, but many like the break for home mortgage interest are so popular that it is hard to see how he would keep the tax reductions from adding to the red ink.

He wants to boost Pentagon spending ? another move that would make the debt problem worse. He also promises to protect current Social Security and Medicare recipients from cuts.

Romney says he would reduce the deficit by capping federal spending ? now at 23.5 percent of U.S. economy ? at 20 percent by the end of his first term in January 2017. But to make that math work would require deeper cuts in federal programs than Congress is likely to go along with.

With defense spending off limits, such reductions could mean slashing health care for the poor and disabled and huge cuts to programs like homeland security, air traffic control, law enforcement, food inspection, national parks and highways. Throughout nearly a year of campaigning, Romney has avoided saying what he'd cut.

"I have struggled through the last few nights, hoping that I could simply work through this, but today I felt so unwell I had to see a doctor," Rhodes says in the statement. "We absolutely hate to disappoint our incredibly loyal fans and cancel a show at the last minute, but unfortunately the doctor has strongly recommended that this is what we do on this occasion?-- so it is with enormous regret that we are unable to perform in Atlantic City tonight."

The band says that it is hoping to reschedule the show within the next few days.

Donations up at Livestrong cancer awareness network as Armstrong ...

    ?

Lance Armstrong faces the loss of his seven Tour de France titles and a lifetime ban from cycling, but backers of his advocacy work for cancer patients showed undimmed admiration Friday.

?Thanks to all the amazing @livestrong supporters worldwide,? Armstrong said on Twitter, speaking of the Livestrong cancer awareness network his charitable foundation supports. ?Donations today were UP 25x over yesterdays. Thank you thank you thank you!?

Lance Armstrong Foundation chief executive Doug Ulman told ESPN that $3,200 came in Thursday to the organization?s website, a fairly typical day.

As of 4:30 pm (2030 GMT) on Friday, Ulman said $78,000 of unsolicited donations had been received, with 411 people donating compared to 45 on Thursday.

?Our mission is strong as a result of so many generous people,? Ulman said in a Twitter posting.

The US anti-doping agency said it was banning Armstrong for life and stripping him of the record seven Tour de France titles that helped him become a US sports hero and gave him a platform to speak out about cancer.

USADA branded Armstrong a dope cheat a day after the 40-year-old Texan said he wouldn?t accept independent arbitration in a bid to clear himself of charges that he used performance-enhancing drugs to win cycling?s most prestigious race from 1999 to 2005.

The agency laid out five rule violations for which Armstrong has been sanctioned, saying the cancer survivor who became a hero to millions took part in a systematic doping conspiracy, and said his results over a 14-year period starting on August 1, 1998 would be expunged.

Initial reaction from sponsors of Armstrong and his foundation was supportive, with sporting goods manufacturer Nike among several sponsors saying they would stick by him.

The home of Major League Soccer?s Sporting Kansas City will continue to be called Livestrong Sporting Park.

Sporting KC chief executive Robb Heineman said the club won?t consider renaming the $200 million sporting grounds that opened last year.

?The naming rights partnership between our stadium and Livestrong provides an opportunity to spread health and wellness messages that emphasizes the spirit of cancer survivorship,? he said.

?Livestrong?s focus is the fight against cancer and the support of 28 million people around the world affected by this disease, and we believe strongly in this mission.?

The support of donors appeared to bear out the theory that many of those who admire Armstrong for his Livestrong message don?t care if the doping allegations that have long surrounded him are true.

But for those who drew their inspiration from Armstrong?s sporting achievements in the wake of his own cancer fight, the issue may be murkier.

?Lance was a huge inspiration of mine,? tweeted Australian Olympic swimmer Stephanie Rice. ?I don?t know what to think now.?
