Messenger's message from Mercury: Time to rewrite the textbooks

Scientists with the Messenger mission to Mercury unveiled their findings Thursday, which are answering some decades-old mysteries ? but also creating new ones.

The Messenger spacecraft has already begun to rewrite textbooks about Mercury only six months after it settled into orbit around the first planet from the sun.

Its findings, presented at a press conference Thursday, challenge prevailing theories on planetary formation and paint a picture of a planet long ago convulsed by massive lava flows.

As the least studied of the solar system's four inner planets, Mercury is ready for a scientific facelift. But the relative dearth of information about it means that scientists are struggling to make sense of everything Messenger is telling them. For now, the data are raising more questions than answers. But 36 years after humanity's only other visits to Mercury ? two Mariner 10 flybys in 1974 and 1975 ? scientists are at least learning which questions to ask.

"Mercury is not the planet described in the textbooks," said James Head III, a mission team member and geologist at Brown University in Providence, R.I.

In Messenger's first months orbiting Mercury, the mission has focused on the questions raised by Mariner 10 decades ago.

Foremost among them was Mercury's curious construction. The iron core of Mercury is much larger relative to the planet's total size than the cores of any other inner planet ? Venus, Earth, or Mars.

Since Mariner 10's flybys, several theories emerged as to why this could be. Perhaps Mercury was once two to three times bigger and much of its outer surface was blown away by the intensity of the sun. Or perhaps the outer surface of a once-larger was removed in a cataclysmic collision.

Messenger, it seems, has ruled out every theory ? except one: the theory of enstatitic chondritic composition. Mercury might have formed through the accretion of metal-rich space rocks called chondrite ? one of the leftovers from the formation of the solar system. Some 86 percent of all meteorites that are seen as they fall to Earth and are collected are made of chondrite, though only 2 percent of those are enstatite chondrites, the metal-rich form thought to be involved in Mercury's formation.

The reason this is the last theory standing is Messenger's surprising detection of elements such as potassium and sulfur. Solar siphoning or a cosmic collision would have generated tremendous heat on Mercury, burning off these volatile elements. Their continuing presence on Mercury means that such a heat-intense episode could never have happened.

The problem with the theory of enstatitic chondritic composition, however, is that it raises questions about the other inner planets, which do not appear to have formed this way.

"Its an open question as to why Mercury looks so much like chondritic material, while Earth does not," says Patrick Peplowski, a staff scientist at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab, which is running the mission.

A second Mariner-era mystery was the apparent lack of obvious vulcanism in Mercury's distant past. Unlike the moon, which shows clear evidence of ancient vulcanism with its dark plains called maria, Mercury is widely pitted by craters and lacking obvious surface features that suggest lava flows once repaved the surface.

This is important because vulcanism is seen as being integral to planetary dynamics. Dr. Head called it "the pulse of a planet."

Sure enough, six months at Mercury provided the closer look that scientists sought. They found relatively smooth plains in the northern high latitudes, covering about 6 percent of the planet's total surface area.

What they did not find, was clear evidence of volcanoes. Notably absent were the huge bulges in the landscape that characterize shield volcanoes ? the sort of volcanoes present on the Big Island of Hawaii and littered across the Martian surface.

The apparent answer: gashes on the surface of Mercury that poured out lava in huge events were later covered by that lava, making them impossible to see from orbit. Still, scientists have found likely candidates for lava vents and the lava flows that came from them.

Scientists also have learned a little more about why Mercury's craters look brighter and bluer than others around the solar system. Photos have shown that crater floors are fretted with what the mission team calls "hollows" ? small, irregular-shaped depressions that look like honeycombs.

The scientists are not sure what causes the hollows ? which could still be forming across Mercury ? but suggest that some material might become unstable when exposed to the surface, leaving the small pits behind.

"We're making fundamental new discoveries," said Head.

AT&T retail store opening in Bangor in early 2012 ? Maine ...

BANGOR, Maine ? The people at AT&T think Bangor is a good call.

Despite persistent speculation to the contrary, the new building that has sprung up on Stillwater Avenue near the main entrance to Walmart will not be another chain eatery, it will be selling cellphones and services.

?We are excited to be coming to Bangor to set up shop sometime early in 2012,? said Meaghan Wims, an AT&T spokeswoman.

Carol Epstein, a broker for Epstein Commercial Real Estate in Bangor, confirmed Monday that the future tenant of 878 Stillwater Ave. will be an AT&T cellular retail store.

?Speaking as a broker and representing the company in that capacity, I can say it?s just about finished and the tenant is now going to go in and do a lot of interior setup,? said Epstein.

Site work began in June and construction of the 3,500-square-foot building started in July.

Buffalo adds super secure DriveStation Axis Velocity and rugged MiniStation Extreme USB 3.0 storage lineup

Buffalo DriveStation Axis Velocity and MiniStation Extreme
The MiniStation Extreme and DriveStation Axis Velocity aren't exactly ground-breaking products, but they're certainly nice additions to Buffalo's lineup of USB 3.0-packing storage solutions. The Axis Velocity is a pretty standard external drive for a desktop, with platters inside it spinning at 7,200 RPM. What sets it apart from a good chunk of the crowd is the 256-bit AES hardware encryption, which is tough enough to meet even the government's stringent security standards. The MiniStation Extreme goes truly portable and rugged -- for those who have a tendency to drop things or hit them with a hammer. The MiniStation ships in 500GB and 1TB capacities for $95 and $130 respectively, while the Axis Velocity starts at $95 for the 1TB model and goes up to $135 for 2TB and $180 for three. Check out the gallery below and the complete PR after the break.

PFT: Titans' Britt to have MRI on knee Monday

New York Giants v Philadelphia EaglesGetty Images

There was no miracle this time.

The Giants beat up the Eagles 29-16 on Sunday, knocking out Michael Vick in the process.?

1. The Giants won this game because they were tougher in short yardage. The Eagles were in position to prevail in second half. They couldn?t convert during multiple chances on the goal line and settled for a field goal. ?LeSean McCoy was stuffed on fourth and one in the fourth quarter.

New York converted their similar opportunities down the stretch. Ahmad Bradshaw finished with 139 yards from scrimmage.

2. Eli Manning threw four touchdown passes. It seemed like the Giants kept dialing up the perfect play call to combat the Eagles blitz.

3. Yeah, Eagles defenders Kurt Coleman and Casey Matthews were exposed on first half TDs. But it was Philly?s biggest name ? Nnamdi Asomugha? that gave up the decisive play of the game.

Victor Cruz out-leaped Asomugha at the goal line for a touchdown to take the lead in the fourth quarter. Cruz had two long scores and was deep another time. ?Cruz partied like it was the preseason of 2010.

4. Maybe Andy Reid was smart last week not to be too aggressive with Mike Kafka. ?The backup?s first pass on Sunday was a deep pass that was picked off. He was intercepted again later in the quarter.

If Vick can?t play next week, it will be interesting to see if the Eagles roll with Vince Young.

5. The Eagles have to be very concerned about the hits Vick takes on a weekly basis. That?s the formula to beat the Eagles ? beat up Vick.

6. Don?t underestimate the importance of this game. The Giants have two games against the NFC West coming up. ?They could get to 4-1 despite all their injuries. ?Tom Coughlin teams always seem to play best when things look bleakest.

7. The NFC East looks wide open with four good, not great teams.

Nature offers key lessons on harvesting solar power, say chemists

ScienceDaily (Sep. 23, 2011) ? Clean solutions to human energy demands are essential to our future. While sunlight is the most abundant source of energy at our disposal, we have yet to learn how to capture, transfer and store solar energy efficiently. According to University of Toronto chemistry professor Greg Scholes, the answers can be found in the complex systems at work in nature.

"Solar fuel production often starts with the energy from light being absorbed by an assembly of molecules," said Scholes, the D.J. LeRoy Distinguished Professor at U of T. "The energy is stored fleetingly as vibrating electrons and then transferred to a suitable reactor. It is the same in biological systems. In photosynthesis, for example, antenna complexes composed of chlorophyll capture sunlight and direct the energy to special proteins called reaction centres that help make oxygen and sugars. It is like plugging those proteins into a solar power socket."

In an article in Nature Chemistry to be published Sept. 23, Scholes and colleagues from several other universities examine the latest research in various natural antenna complexes. Using lessons learned from these natural phenomena, they provide a framework for how to design light harvesting systems that will route the flow of energy in sophisticated ways and over long distances, providing a microscopic "energy grid" to regulate solar energy conversion.

A key challenge is that the energy from sunlight is captured by coloured molecules called dyes or pigments, but is stored for only a billionth of a second. This leaves little time to route the energy from pigments to molecular machinery that produces fuel or electricity. How can we harvest sunlight and utilize its energy before it is lost?

"This is why natural photosynthesis is so inspiring," said Scholes. "More than 10 million billion photons of light strike a leaf each second. Of these, almost every red-coloured photon is captured by chlorophyll pigments which feed plant growth." Learning the workings of these natural light-harvesting systems fostered a vision, proposed by Scholes and his co-authors, to design and demonstrate molecular "circuitry" that is 10 times smaller than the thinnest electrical wire in computer processors. These energy circuits could control, regulate, direct and amplify raw solar energy which has been captured by human-made pigments, thus preventing the loss of precious energy before it is utilized.

Last year, Scholes led a team that showed that marine algae, a normally functioning biological system, uses quantum mechanics in order to optimize photosynthesis, a process essential to its survival. These and other insights from the natural world promise to revolutionize our ability to harness the power of the sun.

"Lessons from nature about solar light harvesting" was written by Scholes, Graham Fleming of the University of California, Berkeley, Alexandra Olaya-Castro of University College, London UK and Rienk van Grondelle of VU University in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

GOP Debate Signals End of Bachmann Campaign (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | The latest Republican debate, hosted by Fox News and Google, took place in Orlando, Fla., Thursday night. The expected candidates were all on hand: Herman Cain, Michele Bachmann, Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum, Ron Paul, Rick Perry, Newt Gingrich, and Jon Huntsman. Joining them on the stage was former governor of New Mexico and Libertarian Gary Johnson, whose appearance was a surprise to some viewers.

In this debate, much like the last one, Perry and Romney were placed next to each other on the stage. The two candidates were given much more face time than the rest of the candidates, leaving Bachmann with only the opportunity to stand and nod through much of the evening.

Could the Florida debate signal the end of the Michele Bachmann campaign? All of the major public opinion polls leading up to the debate show Bachmann trailing fourth among the candidates. She is not only behind Perry and Romney, but also behind Ron Paul.

Bachmann's answers during the debate echoed her previous answers. She yet again brought up her biological and foster children. She yet again referred to Obamacare as the reason that aren't hiring, and promised to repeal Obamacare. Her use of recycled talking points prevented her from actually being able to join in on any of the heated exchanges between Perry and other candidates.

She was not questioned on subjects like foreign policy, indicating that even the debate organizers have written Bachmann's candidacy off. She did attempt to jump in on one foreign policy conversation, though the rebuttal was against Gary Johnson, which only showed she was unwilling to debate the bigger threats to her candidacy.

Bachmann's longest statement in the entire debate came when she defended her previous remarks about Rick Perry's mandate that 12-year old-girls in Texas receive the HPV vaccine. Though she made a valid argument about parental rights versus government mandates, even this seemed to be yet another scripted talking point.

In the end, Bachmann's inability to command the stage was a reflection of the direction of her campaign. Though she may have won the Iowa straw poll, her 15 minutes as the Republican and Tea Party favorite have come to an end. She would be wise to save her political donors some money and throw in the towel now; her campaign is dead in the water after Thursday's debate.

Cards lose shot at Central, ground in wild-card

Albert Pujols

By R.B. FALLSTROM

updated 12:06 a.m. ET Sept. 24, 2011

ST. LOUIS - The St. Louis bullpen took another pounding, leaving the Cardinals' wild-card hopes in serious jeopardy. Manager Tony La Russa was pretty peeved about his hitters, too.

Alfonso Soriano's first home run of the month was a tiebreaking three-run shot in the eighth inning that sent the Chicago Cubs to a 5-1 victory on Friday night.

"We're not worried about if it's St. Louis or Atlanta who makes the playoffs," Soriano said. "We've just got to keep playing hard. I hope the Cardinals make the playoffs but they have to work hard because nothing is given in this game."

The loss dropped the Cardinals three games behind Atlanta, which beat Washington 7-4, for the wild card. The defeat also clinched the NL Central for Milwaukee.

"We started this run weeks ago, everybody counted us out a long time ago and we battled back to give ourselves a chance," Cardinals starter Chris Carpenter said. "I think it was to try to play hard and play well the rest of the year, no matter what happens. We're going to be here ready to go. Everybody's excited."

The Cardinals grounded into three double plays for a season total of 165, by far the most in the major leagues and one shy of the team's National League record set in 1958. They were 3 for 16 with men on base and 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position.

"It's an irritating game," La Russa said. "A lot of things were irritating me, when you've got this much at stake."

Carpenter was lifted for a pinch hitter in the bottom of the seventh after throwing 93 pitches. The St. Louis bullpen got punished for the second straight game when Soriano connected off Kyle McClellan (12-7). Starlin Castro added an RBI single off Mitchell Boggs in the ninth.

Carpenter had no argument with La Russa's decision to lift him. During his tenure in St. Louis, the manager rarely has lifted his aces when they still had the game in their hands and with a reasonable pitch count.

"We need to win and we need to get some runs," Carpenter said. "Me leading off the inning isn't a great chance to score some runs."

The Cardinals missed a chance to narrow their wild-card deficit to one game on Thursday when they let the New York Mets score six runs in the ninth off three relievers. Now, after the fourth loss in 16 games, they have just five games left to catch Atlanta.

"What are they doing over there right now?" Cubs pitcher Matt Garza yelled in the clubhouse. "Going 'aww man, aww man.'"

Shortstop Rafael Furcal, whose fielding error opened the door for the Mets' big inning, did not play. He has five errors in his last six games.

St. Louis grounded into its last double play in the eighth after getting two hits off Jeff Samardzija (8-4) with Matt Holliday set to pinch hit.

"Anything but a double play, that would have been fun to see," La Russa said. "Just irritating."

Carpenter allowed a run on five hits in seven innings, coming on the heels of eight shutout innings in his last start against the Phillies. His squeeze bunt in the second drove in the Cardinals' lone run.

The Cardinals surpassed 3 million in attendance for the eighth straight season with a crowd of 40,355.

Castro opened the game with a single for his 200th hit, at age 21 becoming the youngest player in Cubs history to do it. Carlos Pena had an RBI double in the sixth and three walks to give him 97 on the year, the most by a Cubs first baseman in statistics kept since 1900.

Darwin Barney tripled to lead off the eighth and Pena was intentionally walked with one out before Soriano, who's 4 for 8 with two homers and five RBIs against McClellan, hit his first homer since Aug. 30 into the visitors' bullpen in left.

"I was just looking for my pitch, a little in and a little up," Soriano said. "I think when I see him I'm more comfortable at the plate. I made a good swing and I think he made a bad pitch."

The Cardinals loaded the bases with one out in the sixth on two walks and a single. Ryan Dempster fell behind 2-0 in the count to each of the first four hitters but Ryan Theriot grounded into a double play swinging on the first pitch.

Dempster allowed a run on four hits in six innings, his fifth quality start in five tries this month with nothing to show for it. He's 0-3 in September despite a 3.34 ERA, and 0-5 in his last seven overall.

NOTES: Kyle Lohse (14-8, 3.47) opposes Rodrigo Lopez (6-6, 4.71) in the second game of the series Saturday. Lopez is 2-5 with a 6.70 ERA against the Cardinals and Lohse is one shy of his career high for wins. ... The Cardinals honored farm clubs Johnson City (Appalachian) and Quad Cities (Midwest) for championship seasons in a pregame ceremony. ... Cubs 3B D.J. Crippled MLA shot dead in Orrisa, Maoists suspected (Reuters)

BHUBANESWAR (Reuters) ? A wheelchair-bound MLA and his bodyguard were shot dead in Orissa by suspected Maoist rebels, a senior police official said on Saturday.

Three men riding on a single motorcycle opened fire at Jagabandhu Majhi, whose legs are crippled, as he attended a public function at the village of Gona in Nabrangpur district.

Police suspect Maoist rebels active in the area for the death of the 39-year old MLA as well as his bodyguard, but did not rule out that others may have been responsible.

"We are keeping all options open," state police chief M.M. Praharaj told Reuters.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has said Maoist rebels, who effectively control large swathes of territory in central and eastern India including Orissa, are the country's gravest internal security threat.

The rebels say they are fighting for the rights of the poor.

Why Nirvana's 'Nevermind' spoke to a generation

It was one of the most influential rock albums of all time and arguably the last rock album to drastically change the course of popular music. And come Sept. 24, the album in question, Nirvana?s ?Nevermind,? will mark its 20th anniversary with as much fanfare as you?d expect from such a significant piece of pop culture history.

For starters, the album is getting re-released in two versions. There?s a two-CD ?deluxe edition? which has the remastered album plus B-sides, live cuts and studio sessions. There?s also a four-CD ?super deluxe edition? with all of the above, plus the first official release of the pre-?Nevermind? demos, an alternate mix of the album, a pair of previously unreleased BBC recordings, and a recording of a live 1991 show at Seattle?s Paramount Theater featured on both CD and DVD.

Out in medialand, SPIN magazine put together a free, downloadable tribute album of ?Nevermind? cover versions and Alternative Press magazine had 20 bands share their thoughts about the album. Comedy Central?s Jon Stewart is hosting a Q&A session on SiriusXM with surviving band members Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic Sept. 24 and SiriusXM is launching a temporary all-Nirvana channel, Nevermind Radio, Sept. 23-28.

Story: Grohl, Novoselic reminisce about 'Nevermind'

    1. Why Nirvana's 'Nevermind' spoke to a generation

?Nevermind? has been credited over the years with commercializing grunge and alternative rock, ushering in a more serious era of hard rock, helping to kill off hair metal and establishing Seattle as a musical force (even though Nirvana itself was from Aberdeen, Wash.)

But two decades later, it's still unclear why ?Nevermind,? of all albums, became so ?contagious,? to quote its lead single, ?Smells Like Teen Spirit.? Why didn?t albums by Nirvana?s peers, like Alice in Chains, or predecessors like Husker Du, set the world alight?

Timing is (almost) everything
According to Charles R. Cross, the author of ?Heavier Than Heaven,? a biography of Nirvana front man Kurt Cobain, both musical and non-musical factors led to the mega-success of ?Nevermind.?

?It?s an incredible album,? Cross said. ?It would have been a hit whenever it was released. But at the same time, the timing was right for there to be a superstar act like Nirvana. It came right at the end of the death knell of hair metal and the world was screaming for rock music that would be meaningful again. And the timing for a new generation wanting a voice was also ideal.

?It just so happened that everything came together at the exact right moment when rock needed a revolution,? Cross said.

Bands from Seattle had already landed some albums on the charts and the city?s music scene was poised for a mainstream breakthrough, said Jack Endino, who produced Nirvana?s debut album ?Bleach.?

?People were starting to pay attention to the Seattle thing,? Endino said. ?People don?t remember that before ?Nevermind? came out we already had Soundgarden on the charts and we had (the Top 50 album) ?Facelift? by Alice in Chains and ?Uncle Anesthesia? by Screaming Trees. People were already beginning to pay attention to what was coming out of Seattle because it was kind of unprecedented for a place like Seattle to suddenly have rock albums on the album charts ? not just one band but two, three or four bands.?

What Endino said Seattle needed at the time was ?one really big breakthrough album to come through to really get people to focus on it.? And that?s what ?Nevermind? did, he said.

?What the ?Nevermind? record had was good melodies,? said Endino. ?People forget that ?Smells Like Teen Spirit? has a very Beatlesque melody. That?s not a trivial melody. That?s a very sort of sophisticated melody to actually hear in a rock ?n? roll song, especially at that point in time when hip hop was coming along which was not particularly melodic.?

Said rock writer Chuck Eddy: ?It had a great chord progression that worked in ?Louie Louie? and ?More Than a Feeling.? And it had a great video. Not only was (Cobain) a pretty guy, but he also wrote pretty melodies.?

Few at the time predicted such success for the album, Nirvana?s first effort for a major record label, Geffen Records. According to Chad Channing, who drummed on ?Bleach,? and worked on some of the early ?Nevermind? songs, the album?s explosion on the pop charts wasn't foreseen by either the band or its core audience.

?Playing live, I couldn?t really discern any difference between stuff that we were playing from the ?Bleach? record and then the new stuff,? Channing said. ?They seemed to like it all.?

Story: 12 unlikely covers of 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'

In the studio, Channing said, ?we didn?t really get a lot of feedback per se about the stuff we were recording. So there wasn?t, ?Oh yeah, this is totally awesome.? But we were liking it.?

Yet when a friend brought an advanced copy of the finished ?Nevermind? to Channing, the drummer said he heard potential he hadn?t noticed before.

?I remember thinking when I got done listening to it, ?God, this is a great record. I?ll bet this is gonna do pretty well,?? he said. ?And, of course, later it got so huge it was like ?Whoa, I didn?t think it?d get this big.??

?I?m so lonely, and that?s OK?
Brandon Geist, the editor of the rock and heavy metal magazine Revolver, was 13 years old when ?Nevermind? came out. He said the main reason it had an impact on him and his generation was the seriousness of its lyrics.

?I remember hearing ?Come As You Are? on the radio,? Geist said. ?It was one of those magic moments where it was like ?What is this? This speaks to me in a way that nothing I?d heard before had.??

Geist said that before ?Nevermind,? commercial hard rock was ?a very sort of macho genre,? where glam rock bands would sing about partying and women, thrash metal bands sang of political and social issues, and straight-up heavy metal bands sang about ?Dungeons and Dragons? themes.

?But after ?Nevermind? hit, suddenly it was cool to be in a hard rock band and to sing about your feelings ? and to sing about your feelings in a complex way,? Geist said. ?Hard rock became inward-looking. You can see that influence in the nu metal bands like Korn or Slipknot. All of a sudden it was acceptable to be in a metal band and to sing about your neighbor molesting you or something. Hard rock really became cathartic as opposed to escapist.?

Inward-looking lyrical couplets like ?I?m so lonely, and that?s OK? (from ?Lithium?) also resonated with Nirvana?s musical peers ? to the point where the focus of hard rock music was permanently changed ? for better or worse, according to Eddy.

Grunge no more: Seattle's tourist transformation

?Once Nirvana hit, there was this assumption that you had to present yourself seriously,? Eddy said. ?So this kind of dreariness set into commercial hard rock that has not abated in the 20 years since, all the way up to the post-grunge bands Staind and Nickelback.?

Regardless of any detrimental influence Nirvana may have had on artists that came afterwards, new generations of listeners have been able to connect with the band?s music in much the same way the original grunge fans did back in 1991, Cross believes.

?What people forget is that Nirvana?s music reaches across generations and across cultures,? Cross said. ?The songs that Kurt wrote were so deep and meaningful that they have continued to speak to new generations of people who find meaning in them.

?That, I think, is the reason for ?Nevermind?s? lasting legacy,? Cross said. ?It?s not Kurt Cobain?s personality, it?s not who he was as a rock star. It?s simply that the songs themselves have a life beyond Kurt?s fame.?

Michael Azerrad, author of the 1993 best-seller ?Come as You Are: The Story of Nirvana,? said by email that Nirvana?s music was able to resonate with teenagers because it spoke to them in an honest way.

Slideshow: Nirvana (on this page)

?After years of inane dance-pop (Milli Vanilli) and inane hair farmer bands (Warrant), kids wanted rock music that spoke to and about them,? Azerrad wrote, ?instead of focus-grouped junk approved by a bunch of greying, coked-up baby boomer record execs. Nirvana?s music had a crucial edge because it encapsulated a lot of the underground and alternative music those kids probably heard bits of but hadn't been able to get into because it was too raw and unmelodic. And it didn't hurt that the singer was kind of cute.?

?Nevermind? still holds an important place in the rock pantheon because it was released at a time when pop music hadn?t become so divided into subgenres and a hit rock album could resonate far beyond its core audience, Cross said. Consequently, it?s looked back upon as perhaps the final game-changing rock album.

?In that era there was such a thing as a rock artist that cut across all demographics and spectrums,? Cross said. ?Now you don?t even have heavy metal anymore; you have death metal and you have speed metal and all the other fractionalization. What has happened in the last two decades is that music has become so specific that there are no longer artists of any sort that have that mainstream crossover power.?

Perpetual Storage | 15 laws of business security

security officer badgeWe recently ran across an excellent article by Dr. Peter Cochrane on Business Cloud News that addresses security risks at businesses.

His case study is eye opening for anyone charged with protecting valuable company information.

From his experience, he assembled 15 laws of security.

15 Laws of Business Security

  1. Resources are deployed inversely proportional to actual risk
  2. Perceived risk never equals actual risk
  3. Security people are never their own customer
  4. Cracking systems is 100-times more fun than defending them
  5. Security standards are an oxymoron
  6. There is always a threat
  7. The biggest threat is always in a direction you?re not looking
  8. You need two security groups ? one to defend and one to attack
  9. People expect 100% electronic security
  10. Nothing is 100% secure
  11. Security and operational requirements are mutually exclusive
  12. Hackers are smarter than you ? they are younger!
  13. Legislation is (and will always be) many years behind
  14. As life becomes faster and chaotic, it becomes less secure. But the good news is half-lives are getting shorter too!
  15. People are always the biggest risk factor. Machines are perverse, but they ain?t devious, not yet anyway!

News And Society ? Easier Information ? Blog Archive ? The Right ...

Posted on September 18, 2011, 1:16 am, by admin.

If you are looking to line up a home weather station then you have one weighty decision to make; do you purchase the meteorological equipment parts separately or do you buy an all in one weather station?

There are pros and cons to both options. If you decide to buy the parts of your weather station as individual items of meteorological equipment then you?ll have a much more versatile setup. You can monitor, wind, sunlight and rain all in different places. This is relevant if you are thinking about setting up any kind of alternative power such as wind or solar. It can also be useful for small holdings to be able to work out the best places for different crops and plants.

The problem with buying separate elements is you can run up quite a massive bill. A quick look at one of the popular suppliers, for example, Davis, will tell you that each part is the price of a small complete weather station.

Presuming that you are looking to collate fairly accurate weather reports and data, then you will need to buy on of the top end weather stations if you go for the all-in-one choice.
One of the finest companies for that is something such as the RainWise Incorporated. They have created some very advanced weather stations which give accurate readings and have great facilities for interfacing with PCs to create a database of observations.

The most effective way to decide between these 2 options is to draw up an inventory of what you would like to achieve and record with your weather station. If you?re looking to install solar power then the most vital thing is the level of daily sun. However , if you?re looking to cultivate a certain plant you may be more enthusiastic about rain. Similarly if you?re looking to substantiate changes in the weather then you?ll need to observe all areas. It is very important to define your wants as the advertising can be compelling and you can find that you purchased something positively amazing, though not actually what you required.

Be sure to have a look at our meteorological equipment guidance and reviews of some of the home weather stations currently available
